Cost of a Custom Rifle with Glass

Frank, once again we see things just a "wee" bit differently!

Those that hunt in your mentioned scenarios, are in close proximity to their quarry. The hunter must be careful of his smell and wind direction, must be very still, must be very quiet…..often close to several animals? These things require that the hunter be on top of his/her game in all aspects!

The aforementioned criteria means little to nothing when shooting game at extreme distances. The hunter only needs a very capable rifle/cartridge/ bullet and the skill set to place the bullet properly.

These are two vastly different hunting styles, which can't be compared……each requiring different equipment and skill set. memtb
I'm with you.....a lot of wizz different for me. I will never speak ill of others hunting style or technique or method if it is moral and legal. May not be what I do or want to do, and I wont reduce anyone elses opportunity to hunt and enjoy their outdoors. Nothing worse than one hunter bashing or being against another legal hunter over feelings. We all have to fight off the majority of non and anti hunters on our own let alone bashing each other.

I did full break down to order 300 of each part to build 300 rifles. All identical. Custom made mcmillan for me, custom pelican cases, bipod & tripod and br4 rangefinder. Zco scopes rings, proof barrel and bat action full turn key gun my cost was 13,000 that was 25-30% off every part at dealer cost. Retail was around 16500$. That was including 100 loaded rounds
WOW
300 RIFLES!
Reminds me of the Movie 300 with Gerad Butler!

What would you spend or have spent?

What is your budget (costs) for a complete custom rifle with glass if you were having someone build for you or you building?
Since today I finally finished our Taxes and had a lot of receipts to go over.

I was tabulating some costs of our rifles from last year with glass including purchase price shipping & taxes. We have (5) builds like this.
$1,500 - Stock with inlet & bedding or Chassis
$500.00 to $2,000.00 for BiPod or Front Rest
$1,500 - $2,000.00 - Action
$550.00 for SS Barrel
$800.00 for CF Barrel
Buy (2) Same Barrels at the same time. First barrel to Dial in and or Fire Form and Second for having an accurate rifle.
$300.00 to 400.00 Trigger
$300.00 - $400.00 for Scope Mount
$200.00- Brake
$3,000.00 to $4,000.00 + for Glass
$300.00 ++++ for Gunsmith to Chamber Fit & Finish
$300.00 - $400.00 for Dies - Only component for reloading, all the other reloading components $$$$.

Glass is the most expensive component.

$8,500.00+ mid range cost.
First of all I am not a precision Marksman, I am an older guy, and enjoy hunting and shooting in general, this was my experience during the pandemic. Although I have always desired higher end rifles, when I was younger I could not justify the cost with putting two kids through college and the typical costs of raising a family. As I got older, decided do the things now, or they will never get done. When I was working corporate I helped out a division in South Africa, the gents there invited me to go on a hunt, at time as much as I wanted to go I could not find and purchase a suitable rifle.

Now many years later that hunt is on my bucket list, I decided to purchase a 375 caliber rifle in either 375 H & H or 375 Ruger. To my dismay, there were none to be found for purchase that I had thought would be suitable. As a result I did go the custom route. As I explored the options I did reach out to Weatherby and others, and was told the timing of a rifle build and if they could do it at all, most custom rile companies were only doing smaller calibers.

I did find a barrel manufacturer named Shaw, and they did build rifles. I had a custom 375 Ruger built, it is on a Savage action but does not have the barrel nut, it has stainless steel action, the action is CIP length to allow for longer bullets, it has a DBM, it has bedded H & S precision stock. The fit and finish of the rifle was very good, the barrel is stainless, 26" long, hand lapped. Besides putting on a 20 MOA rail, Vortex matched 34mm rings I did swap out the spring of the accutrigger set at 2.4lbs, which I kept instead of the timney I had purchased(timney did not function properly with the safety). It is topped with a Vortex strike eagle 5 x 25 x56 FFP. Which I used during break-in and sight-in, initial MOA using Buffalo bore ammo was about 0.75 it will get tighter. I still have to install the arca rail for use on a tripod and the adjustable cheek rest. Other items purchased, big stainless brake (can post the vendor nice guy) and an Indian creek blast shield that is over my brake, deflects sound and concussion away from me and other shooters on the sides of me. The recoil with the indian creak device on goes directly into my shoulder, and it looks like a mini suppressor. I was able to obtain the rifle and components purchased, for about, $1900.00, without glass. (I did get a deal on the build of about $500.00 off for the rifle build, during the pandemic) I went less on the glass about $600.00 but for my purposes it will work, I did purchase a light weight Razor LHT I may swap but don't believe it will be necessary. The build took about 9 months to get to me but I am very ☺ happy with the experience. As I will use this rifle for 3 specific hunts probably more as my health permits. I am very pleased with the process and really happy with the rifle. The only thing I would have done differently is have the barrel fluted for weight reduction, have them install another trigger and install the adjustable cheek rest. If anyone is interested in the actual cost breakdown I could find my receipts. The full weight with scope without the adjustable cheek-rest and ARCA rail is under 11lbs.

I have had more than a few custom rifles built…more than some, but I am sure not as many as others. All them were built by top tier smiths and all of them did not disappoint. Cheap? NO, but worth every penny. The way I look at it is "my money and I will spend it like I want". Good day and god bless.
Amen......It was a long wait but just got the good news from Dallas mine will finish up this week. I feel like a kid at Christmas 😁

Ive heard the argument of f people saying i dont need a custom rifle when they can buy christensen or a fierce ect. Most have never shot a full custom gun to know the difference. I wont touch a factory gun of any brand anymore for doing load work unless owner is open to opening his check book. Too many issues in past.
