Coronavirus and Grocery stores

Yeah....i think you are okay with barriers....but it is an airborne
virus....
So...
gloves for employees and liteweight aerators...
And like the guy above said....he touches a lot of things and can leave germs.....maybe supplying gloves to customers..of which you could write off....but anywhere people might pick something up fresh like chicken or veggies...have gloved people standing by to help.....
Otherwise.....good luck.....
Cause it can get to ya from anywhere.....even someone three hours removed.....

If barriers help your employees feel safer and more encouraged to come into work, then by all means, do it. Any customer that doesn't like it is free to go elsewhere, but I seriously doubt anyone would. They'd understand your reason for using some protective measures to protect your people, all things considered. And - as others have stated - thank you to you and your employees for staying on the front lines and helping people get the things they need to stay fed and healthy. It really is appreciated.

I think the plexiglass barriers are a good idea. People can shed virus particles very easily through transient contact and casual interaction. Sodexo runs the food service on my campus. The salad bar and buffets are equipped with the slanted plexiglass barriers that are angled perfectly so that you can look down on your food choices and there is a very effective barrier between a persons respiratory zone and the food. Makes good sense. The practicality of doing so in a checkout aisle might take some engineering but should be doable IMHO.

Thanks to the OP for "taking one for the team" by defraying some of the market force impact to the consumer in this unfavorable supply/demand setting. It's exemplary and it's the kind of thing that will get Americans through this crisis.

I would find out from someone in the medical community if it would be effective. It sounds good but it might not do anything. A quote from an infectious disease Doctor from Johns Hopkins i saw a few days ago "What we don't know, is epic"

Kinda like shutting the gate after the cows have gotten out. People have been through the store, touching and breathing on everything as they go.
This virus is as real as Epstiens suicide and the coverup just as believable.

I was in the bank this last weekend and they had plexi barriers. Noticed the marks on the plexi... assuming bodily fluids. As small as they were it shows that even talking stuff flies out of people's mouths.
I think the plexi is a great idea. Stay safe

The virus is droplet borne, not really airborne like traditional flu. Sneezing, coughing or wiping one's nose, mouth or eyes contaminates any surfaces that may be contacted.
A barrier helps deflect/catch droplets for employees exposed to customers. Gloves are a very effective barrier for handling packages/goods, cash and credit cards.
I applaud your efforts. GOOD ON YOU! THANK YOU@

Sounds like a good idea and personally I'd have no problem with it. The suggestion of talking to someone who understands this virus to see what suggestions they may have to protect all involved sounds like a good idea. Best wishes, thank you for your service and concern.

Good afternoon all. I am the president and ceo of a grocery store chain made up of 110 stores in 8 different states. I am curious as to what the members here think of some stores putting up plexiglass barriers on check out lanes. I dont want to influence anyone's opinion here one way or the other.

I dont know how to do a poll so informally, do you all believe that is:
a) a good idea, would help protect both consumer and employee
b) a bad idea, would do little if anything to help stop the spread
c) no opinion either way, in effect immaterial

Thanks in advance to those who respond.
B - the products are still being touched by both the cashier and the customer. It gets complicated. I think regular plastic gloves would be best to protect your employees.

I'm just surprised you came to an internet forum thinking this was going to be productive. It's like querying a trailer park about their opinions of Shakespeare.

My trailer is much nicer than the apartment I live in....
I read shake in high school....didnt like it then....still don't 30 years later...
But i like the guy asking our opinions...shows he is getting to the people that don't necessarily run to the store to collect plastic wrapped meals...."WE THE PEOPLE" are worth his consideration....
