southpa- yes,-- I hate buying points on a 2 or 3 point area with too many people and kittle chance of filling my tag ---ill look at gohunt

Dfa- mule deer, white tail is pretty much otc-- i prefer rifle, but I have a decent set up for ml, and I used to bow hunt so I could pull out the old bow and start practicing again- but my old bow limits were 50-60 yards, my ml limits are 150-200 but my self imposed rifle limits are 6-700y so I'd have a better chance with rifle as long as there deer are still there. As far as season 1st seems to be elk only, so 2nd is probably best for me, though I've done 3rd for elk but stayed in a buddies cabin- it can get pretty darn cold in CO during 3/4th season at hunting altitudes once the snow hits

Ridgewalker- I've been gathering points for a while while hunting elk, but there are no otc tags for mule deer in the state -- i know getting away from roads helps that why I set the base camp rv then atv or walk in to hunting areas--- my problem with "early season scouting" has been that once hunting season starts, the animals move-- it seems like preseason scouting doesn't work in high pressure areas and having only 2 weeks off per year (using a week for hunting)- doesn't allow for much scouting anyway


I have on-x, and utilized the cpw mapping website in the past, I also get the cpw hunting stats and use them-- I'll take a look at gohunt too

I'm not sure the price of gohunt is worth it but I only say that because I don't have to pay for it. I benefit greatly from friends who pay for it. It is very helpful for us making out of state plans in the 8 or so states we play the game in every year. We usually see what the odds are for our point totals in units we stand to draw. Then we will look further into each unit to decide if it's the type of country/access etc that we feel like hunting. With this method, we have identified a 5 year plan where each year we are up for a state on the 5th year. It's not fool proof with creep these days, but we started this in the college days and had to have some sort of plan. It's worked for us.

Oops! Sorry I didn't realize this is posted in the "deer" forum!
I'd look for either the Comanche Grasslands, or a walk in area east. I have seen some fine mule deer bucks while pheasant hunting there. Still I'd spend time camping and maybe using your ATV to roam around the grasslands.

I've got about 9 or 10 points (iirc) and I'm looking for a unit with higher probability of filling tag for next year.
No guided hunts, can't afford that. I like to park an rv trailer for a base camp, then can use atv and walk in for spike camp too.

Anyone have a decent area they would like to suggest for public land? Not expecting anyone to give up their honey hole. I live east of Colorado springs, I'd like something within 4 hours or so but will consider any/all co suggestions

I've hunted unit 76 for over 30 years and can give you some suggestions. However, I don't think I have been active enough in the forum to be able to send you a private message. (Or maybe I just don't know how.) Anyway, maybe you can contact me and we can discuss off-thread. Cheers.

Ive already received several pms with some great info to start me out in my search---- lrh forum members are great guys- kinda like a brotherhood!!
Keep the info comming-- I've got lots of research to do before applying for a tag and hopefully plan a few camping/ scouting trips before it's time
