Re-chambering one of my 700 Rem ADL 270's

I have 2 Remington 700 ADL's in 270 Win. One with a 24" barrel and the other with a 22". I am going to re-chamber the shorter barreled rifle to 280 AI to match the type of deer and coyote hunting I do. I don't want to spend more than $400 to do it. From what I have read I just need to get a new barrel because both rounds are wildcats from the 30-06 and everything will fit/work changing from 270-280. Other rifles I have are 30-06, 308 and 300 Win Mag. I was thinking about 25-06 or 35 Whelen, but have decided on the 280 for what I do and where I hunt. The 35 Whelen is a great round but I don't want to have to get another suppressor for one gun. Last night I saw someone post about a company that I can get a barrel for like $250-$350 but I can't for the life of me find it this morning. Any help would be appreciated.

Just to be sure, you are re-barreling, not re-chambering? What are the wildcats?

Here are the wildcats. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/.30-06_Springfield_wildcat_cartridges Re-chambering and re-barreling are different, but seem to be the same when you stay within the same cartage family from the 30-06. The only difference between 25-06, 270, 280, 35 Whelen and 30-06 is the bullet used and neck size. This would be a re-chamber. The receiver and bolt for the 270 should work for the 280.

Yes, your OP said, re-chamber, and then you said you need a new barrel. So, you are re-barreling. They are not the same process.

I am fully aware of wildcatting. The link you provided are wildcats based on -06 parent case. I have a .270 AI (I had this re-barreled) and .30 Gibbs (this was originally -06 but had it re-chambered to .30 Gibbs). That's why I asked specifically which wildcat you are trying to build so we can provide you a sound recommendation for you to decide on. I do not want to misconstrue your goal. I see a .25-06 and .35 Whelen, but you seem unsure.

Thanks FEENIX, I appreciate it! I was getting a bit confused about re-chambering and re-barreling. I have found different meaning for both depending on where you look. I just spoke to a gunsmith and he walked me through what I need to complete the task and confirmed that the 280AI was a good choice for me. He also said I am just re-barreling because the action and receiver on my existing rig will work just fine with the wildcats. He directed me to Shaw or Criterion barrels. A Shaw barrel we built was $330 for stainless threaded for a suppressor. Going with SS because of what I am using it for and to save my funds. I am still looking at around $550 for the barrel and work. At that price point I may be just buying a new 280AI and giving one of my boys the 270 for their birthday.

Depending on what bullet you are going to use, make sure you have the minimum recommended barrel twist rate.

Like I said, make sure the bullet you are going to use will stabilize with the barrel twist you are getting.

Try northland shooter supply. You would have to take barrel off yourself and change it and probably still going to be right at $400 for threaded barrel. Your cheapest route would probably be to sell the rifle you have and buy one but sometimes we want something just a bit different and that's ok

What kind of hunting do you do? What range coyote/ deer hunting. I'm thinking a 243 win would serve you better.

Mostly deer and coyote out to 500 yards. My longest shot has been at a yote at 401 yards and 358 yards deer with the 270 24" barrel. I have a 243 at my disposal and over 350 pieces of brass and bullets to load up for it.

Nothing against Shaw, but if I'm going to put a new barrel on a rifle I'm not going as cheap as possible. I've bought cheap barrels in the past, sometimes the work great. Most times I wished I had spent the money for something better. I figure anytime I put a new barrel on using a gunsmith it'll be north of $1000 minimum as I'm going to spend $500+ on the barrel alone on a cut rifled barrel.

My longest shot on mule deer has been 580 yards, I made it with a .270 Win and 130 grain Sierra Game Kings. Nothing against the .280 AI, but at 500 yards it isn't really an improvement over the .270 Win. A bullet change to the 129 gr Barnes LRX, 140 gr Berger Classic Hybrid, or 145 gr Hornady ELDX can be a game changer fir the .270 Win with a 1:10 twist.

I think the 6 or 6.5 Creedmoor and the 6 ARC, are a better choice for deer and coyotes.

You can do a remage yourself. Call northland shooters supply. Taking the old barrel off will be the hardest part but if you are not saving the barrel it's not that bad.

Hey Ducky. Appreciate the suggestion. I shoot the 130gr GameKing out of my 270 over 44.9grs of IMR4350 with the 24" barrel that gets sub .5 MOA groups at 100 yards. If I was going to a smaller caliber I would look into the 25-06 or getting a new rifle in 7 PRC. The land I hunt is an agricultural field that is a half mile wide by 1 mile long and flat with no hills around. To me there is too much wind for a lighter/smaller bullet. 270 is the smallest I will go. When I hunt the woods I carry my 30-06 or 35 Remington since I can't shoot more then 100 yards. I also have a 243 I can use that my cousin has. 35 rem, two 270 win's, 30-06 and 300WM are what's in my safe rifle wise. I would go 35 Whelen if I didn't have to get a suppressor just for one gun.
