That's great photography and something I would like to get going on between tags. Certainly can get good Intel on game that way as well as cool pictures.

I hear you! The premium bull tag in Oregon takes 21 preference points at one point per year to have a 100% chance of drawing a tag. You can earn additional preference points by youth hunt mentoring and providing info to successfully prosecute a poacher but these opportunities are few and far between. On top of that when you do draw a bull tag most seasons are only 5 days long! When I was a kid and just passed hunters safety the bull elk season was 19 days. Granted this was 52 years ago but 5 days is unreasonable in IMHO.
During my working years I lived on the west side of the Cascades in WA. I mainly hunted deer near the Sinlahekin WLA which back then I could draw a tag almost every year and it was good for a buck on opening day most of the time. I did not hunt elk in the Cascades , other than one wilderness muzzleloader season, due to the rifle season being more like a combat zone than hunting unit. The best way at the time to get a tag was to apply as a group (may still be) so if one group member drew then the whole group did so the bigger the group the better the chance. It was described by a work friend who's family applied as a group for the Teanaway Unit every year as akin to the Hatfields and McCoys where they recognized opposing groups and where recognized by them. This lead to confrontations over downed animals and all sorts of shenanigans which I wanted nothing to do with.
