Can someone tell me what happened to this bullet?

It struck something solid on entry and spun around and went the rest of the way backwards. I had this happen when I was trying to stop a bull that my friend had wounded 3/4 of a mile from my position. I picked up the wounded bull along with another 6X6 and my only shot was a steep downhill going away shot. My bullet a barnes 168 TTSX glanced off the spine and went diagonally thru the elk backwards and lodged in the far side shoulder. The bull dropped at my shot, but was still alive when we arrived at the scene. my recovered bullet looks a lot like yours...

This came from the offside of my 10 year Olds first buck. It's a 200 gr maker from a 300 blackout @1146 fps.

looks like it started to petal out, then the folded-over petal hit somnething hard, while the bullet had gone a bit off axis. Starting t tumble maybe. Interesting photo.

Don't know is why I asked. Crazy having 2 same weight different usage.

I had two girlfriends just for that reason!!!

i might add that this was only the second barnes bullet i've ever recovered. the first was a straight on shot on a big blacktail. that bullet was recovered in the pelvis bone. all other bullets have exited and the far side hide always showed a clover leaf petal outline!!

It most likely had some debris in the hollow point and did not expand correctly

Unstable, wrong twist, bullets to long who knows

It an 8 twist 300 blackout, I didn't see where it required anything faster than that?

It would help to know:

1) Which bullet is it - most people are assuming it is the 200 Grain .308 Expanding Subsonic
2) How far was the shot?
3) Was there any brush at all in between the shooter and deer at any distance?
4) What was the animal's orientation - broadside? quartering to? quartering away?
5) What was the point of impact/entry on the deer?
6) What did the entrance wound look like? - nice and round?
7) Where was the bullet recovered on the deer?
8) What damage did you observe to the deer?
9) What is the twist rate on the rifle?
10) Is it at all possible that something clogged the hollow point on the bullet, prior to firing?

It is the maker 200 grain. Shot was 100 yards no brush but it looks like it hit the scapula in front of the shoulder,

I hope you get a chance at more cause I'm also going to some subsonic loads for my blk for a few stands that have 65 yards and under shots. Subs with a can under 100 is pretty cool. Tried the sub x and they had vastly variable outcomes. So on to the cutting edge 190. These bullets and a few other peaked my interest.

This is our 3rd subsonic deer.

What is the minimum opening velocity for that bullet?

After skinning the deer, I believe it skinned the top edge of the scapula and turned, I don't completely disagree that the bullet may be slightly under stabilized. Maker offers several more options like the 190 gr. I may test next year, but I spent so much time working this up for him and he did a heck of a job this year.

I can't help but wonder if I shouldn't change the bullet if the overall concensus is that the bullet tumbled.
