Can 308 do everything you need a rifle to do under 600 yards?

Considering the fact the you are loading and preparing your ammo I would say yes to all.
I think bullet selection is critical and needs to be accurately assed for the anticipated conditions.
I shoot 308 the majority of the time at distance and I have become very familiar. I would say the number 1 most impactful variable to solve for whether a shot is successful is the skill of the shooter. People made extreme long range shots successfully in years past with much lower performing firearms than we have today.
It's not the gun that is the question. It's the shooter, every time.

While I have used the .308 out to 600 yards on a wide range of animals. And I believe that if shooting suppressed from a short barrel it is one of the best. I would choose the 6.5 PRC with a 156 grain Berger Elite Hunter over any .308 load. I hunt mostly in the wide open west. I hunt any game from Javelina to elk with this rifle and load and would not hesitate to use it on bigger badder animals.
My rifle is one I built myself, which nowadays is more like screwing together an AR. It is built upon an Aero Precision Solous action set in a MDT HT26 folding chassis and Proof Research 20" Light Sendero prefit barrel with a 1:8 twist and topped with a Thunder Beat Ultra 7 suppressor mounted with an Area 419 system so I can change from suppressor to brake easily. It has a Trigger Tech Diamond two stage trigger. It is sighted with a Leupold VX 6 3-18X42 scope in MDT mounts.
This rig is superior to any I've ever had even though I've owned hundreds of rifles.
This is a long route to exclaim it is not only the cartridge, it is also how the rifle is built, but the entire system that matters.

It's all about physics. I have to shake my head when people say a 308 is only good on elk at 200, 300, or 400 yards when they are more than willing to shoot an elk at 800 yards with a 300 Win Mag. If you do the math, a 308 launching the same 168 grain mono-metal @ 2825 (not unreasonable at all when using the right powder) is actually traveling faster at 600 yards than the same 168 mono-metal launched at 3125 at 800 yards from a 300 win mag with its commonly used powders.

the 308win case regardless of bullet weight is the MOST efficient cartridge there is and i'm not a 308win fan regardless of me having 8 or so i own. just a great all-around cartridge! when i was younger (about 12 to 15 yo) the 308win kinda was scarry to me being a 30cal. the strange thing is i had already been shooting a 264wm since 11yo. sure, the 28cals have a better bc than the 30's do, but the 308win will never die just like 45acp will. i'm not stating a 1911, just 45acp! my 1st firearm in 45acp was a 1911 and it seemed to be terrible until i bought a g21..............that changed my view on that cartridge on how good it is. only bought the g21 cause the ffl owner made me a good deal since he knew i bought a g17. you might not be a glock fan (i'm not necessarily a fan, but do own a few), but that gen4 is very accurate even with wwb 230fmj's. 9's are boring regardless of newer firearms as i have no reason to buy another 9.

Let me extend it by another post.

If y'all like berger Hybrids, run the 168s at 2800 in a 308, see what it is like on paper and on game.

So if a .308 Win could hold 1200 fpe out to 600 yards, it would be sufficient for Elk? (yes or no) No long explanation is needed. Just asking... Cheers.

I like the .308 Win. Elk at 600, doable……but that's a long poke, as it's starting to run out if steam! Plus…..I'm not sure of what kind of bullet expansion you will get @ 1200 fps. memtb

I love the .308 and it will drop a big Deer in it's tracks if you do your job. However, I can't speak and have no experience with Elk, Moose, Bear, etc. I completely understand your logic for only wanting to roll with the .308 for everything. But, you have 5 rifles all chambered in .308. Personally I would rather have four .308 rifles and one 7mm Mag (example) even if it sat in the back of the safe with a few boxes of ammo. Look at the difference in lbs energy at 500 yards between said calibers. One is a small flat head and the other is a large flat head!

My go-to is a LH Forbes in '308. 5lbs+ scoped. I've killed everything with it (especially elk!) inside 600 yards except griz. 165-168gr. Barnes and Accubonds.
Go forth with it and hunt...
