I think bullet selection is critical and needs to be accurately assed for the anticipated conditions.
I shoot 308 the majority of the time at distance and I have become very familiar. I would say the number 1 most impactful variable to solve for whether a shot is successful is the skill of the shooter. People made extreme long range shots successfully in years past with much lower performing firearms than we have today.
It's not the gun that is the question. It's the shooter, every time.
