Can 308 do everything you need a rifle to do under 600 yards?

What's a powder to get that velocity? 24" barrel?

I even got 2800 with a 22 inch M14 using small primer Remington brass from the old days. The case capacity is unmatched even today. Had to use CC1 41s and 50 grains of 2000MR. The rifle was purposed built for heavy use and dedicated for 1000 yard matches

I surely do like the 308 Win. My buddy Gavin built a handy 16" 308, and I had a good 24" 308, so I gathered up some ammo and did a comparison of muzzle velocity between the two of them. Most loads went about 200 fps faster from the long barrel but were certainly useful from the shorter barrel. Perhaps of interest for this discussion:

Greetings Gents,

I am a hunter first and foremost. A few years back I decided to reduce the number of calibers I shoot and reload for. I settled on a 308 as my "do everything" high power cartridge and currently have 5 rifles chambered in 308.

My question is if I know that I will never take a shot longer than 600 yards at game. Will 308 do it all? All species?

Is there anyone else that has done similar/ I would like to hear about your experiences. Post photos too.

Im trying to talk myself out of buying a 300 WSM or 30-06.

Bluejay
Yes, absolutely. 4 yrs late.

Should be plenty for 168's with 24" barrel.

I am a wimp, I never use the word fun and 300 RUM in the same sentence 😆
I actually wanted a 338 edge for fun but the 300 ultra barrel ( Kriger) was ready and almost free . The PTG bolt was the most expensive part of the barreled action

"Can a 308 do everything you need a rifle to do under 600 yards?"

YES......
My daughter Lives, 20 Miles South of, the Canadian Border, in Idaho and I'm going to, Recommend that, she Buy, a 22", 7mm-08 w/ 150 gr. ELD-X's or, a 22" barreled .308 Win., using, 165 gr. Nosler's, Bal Tip's / AccuBonds or, ELD-X's for Her,.. "Combo",. Deer / Elk, Rifle.
( YES, probably, a TIKKA, T-3 Lite ! ) Or, an Older Lever action,. Win, M-88 or, Sav 99
Either of Those 2 Cartridges with, the "Right Bullets" should Be, Fine at, MOST, Practical Ranges as, 600 yds, IS, a Long ways, in Her "Neck of the Woods"

Ah yes......The M14 and M1A-NM. I ran those old friends for many years in Nat'l Match courses and at 800-1,000 yards. Mostly ran the old Sierra 168 MK, 155 Palma and a truck load of the old DCM 173 FMJ bullets in handloads.

While I have shot a lot of 18" barrel 308 for hunting and other, I also have a 26" medium weight, target rifle I run a lot of 155's in at 3,000 fps. Wearing only a 4-16x scope, That rifle has shot some of my smallest 600 yard, 30 caliber groups to date. A lot of calibers and cartridges are faster and flatter, but never under-estimate a good 308.
