Calling all 270 cal loyals.

Ehhh idk, not a big nosler fan. I have 500x 170 eol I got on clearance when bullets.com was closing. I'll get some 175 matrix ordered too. I'll wait and see reports on the able prior, not a lot of guys on here shoot em from what I researched.
My experience with Accubonds has been just the opposite, I love 'em. Please note that Accubonds are alleged by Nosler to expand all the way down to 1300 fps. If that's true, then it's a significant advantage over most other bullets.

Yes. I need @elkaholic to make some head stamped ADG 270ss brass and Is be in. Or just a reamer...I have a 280 Sherman and am looking forward to a short action build to complement it.

I agree!! With head stamped 270.ss brass I would of been in years ago! I'm waiting and waiting for this brass. I think this is the perfect short action design and being a huge 270 fan it's my ideal cartridge. I've been holding out for 2 plus years and I'm about to do a tikka 270 wsm build instead. Not exactly what I want, but What do you do

Accubond or accubond LR? The regular AB has crap bc but will break down an elk shoulder. ABLR, idk what it's capable of. Expansion down to 1300fps indicates blow-up on a shoulder shot within 300y

I am referring to the Accubond ABLR that has just issued at 165 grains for .270. Nosler rates the ABLR as effective between 3400 fps and 1300 fps. The 160 grain Accubond bullet has a different ogive so it will stabiltze in 10:1 barrels.

A 270 SAUM in a 3.1 Action and 1/8 twist barrel would make a great cartridge. Any one of Sherman Short mags would make a great 270. I also hesitate to have ammo and rifles laying around with non matching headstamp. It is a disaster waiting to happen. I am not knocking those who do. With 3 sons and 4 grandchildren I just don't want to risk it.

A good friend of mine asked me to take a look at his 30-06. He said the bolt was locked up with a round in it. Well, I got it open and low & behold when I yanked the bolt back, a 7mm -08 round slung out. He said it had been that way for 3 years and he had a pocket full of cartridges and that 7mm-08 round got mixed in some how he guessed. I guess it can happen to the best of us.

Great read. I must admit I'm a big fan of the .284 and .30 caliber bullets. The bigger the better mentality that I had grew up believing. I've played around with the 6.5's and the .277 because of getting my sons shooting, the big 7's and 30's made them shoot their pants. My older son loves his tikka 270 wsm and my younger son is a killer with his savage model 16 in .277 wolverine. My sons have zero interest in my big magnums and hopefully this new offerings in the 270 will peak their interests and get them to try them out. I would sell all of my rifles that they won't use to fund new rifles that they will.
When I first bought my 26 Nosler when it first came out I had to look for brass and dies and came across 27 Nosler dies on eBay and was wondering if it was a misprint. All these years later it finally seems to be a reality. I always wondered why they skipped the .277 in Nosler "magnum" offerings.

I'm interested in the 26 nosler also. I've heard it's a bit touchy to find an accurate load for. I'm still comtemplating on building one.

The difference between the .277 and .284 is so slight, when I decided on one caliber for everything, I went with the 7mm. Back then, the bullet selection for .270 was pretty slim. If I had to make the choice today, I'd probably go with .270. I was looking for the highest SD and BC I could get at a weight I could stand to shoot. 7mm fills that pretty well. I shoot Berger 168 gr VLD in my WSM. It makes it a single shot rifle, but that is all you need if you do it right. When hunting bear, I fill the mag with 160 gr. Barnes, and they shoot close to the same point of impact. So far I haven't used the Barnes. The other issue with those long bullets is that I have to remove the bolt to empty the chamber. A PITA, but worth it for the groups thoes Bergers shoot.

I have enough 175s for the life of my barrel and have been shooting them for a while. My .270 AI 30" Lilja 1:8" 3G propels them at 2993 FPS (my current accuracy load) using H4831SC. Others are reporting ~100 FPS faster with RL26.

.277 bullet diameter has more potential now that there is a better bullet selection than in the past and should do very well in many different cartridges with a wide range of bullet weights.

You mentioned something based on a 308 case and the obvious choice would be the 260 rem necked up from .264 to .277. When you are in this neck of the woods, .013 thousandths difference doesn't make enough difference to be worth the effort to wildcat something.

Bigger/heavier bullets don't necessarily fill the needs for every .277 diameter rifle or action length. The 130 grain bullets were the best performers in my 270 and won my first 600 yard match, so distance should not be a problem. Pick the performance level you want with the bullet weight, and chose the correct action length and you will be happy.

For the small performer in .277 I really like the 6.8 SPC . the next step in a short action would be the 260 necked up to .277. then I would go with the 270 WSM or one of the more well known wildcats in .277 designed for short actions. If a long action was to be used, I would start with the old reliable 270 Win and/or maybe a 270 AI. or any of the newer 270 cartridges that are available. If you wanted to go hog wild then neck down some of the big 7mm cartridges.

I've had multiple ,270 cal rifle & took game with them. Also had and still have multiple 7mms. When building a rifle, I like to have a vast selection of quality bullets. The 7mm has that. 270 is catching up a little. The biggest reason for misconception of the 7mm rm is that for years folks were running light bullets. Terminal performance shines with 160-180 gr bullets in the 7mm rm and 175 is what it was originally designed for. Just as the 6.5 cm was optimized for 140s and 270 win was optimized for 130s. All of the trash talk about any cartridge of any caliber size is nothing more than poor bullet choice combined with poor choices for it's application for what they were doing with it.
