California Hunting?

Elk..................No, but my son kills a Black Bear over there every year. Give the Liberals a few more years and hunting will be a think of the past in that state. Hunting will be restord when the State goes belly up because no one that has a job lives there anymore. Then Deer and Bear season will be open again, with no laws or restraints and Leg hold traps will be legal again also.

Black bear hunting here is ridiculous. I usually see more bears when deer hunting in archery than deer, less than during rifle. I thin it has to do with the manzanita berry crop than anything. Next year, I'm going to try to kill a bear with bow.
I could have killed 2-3 last year with my bow.

The Elk hunting here is legit. Hot, very much so. Well it's usually around 75-85 during the day and high 40's at night. When the weather turns to the upper 20's to lower 30's, the rut goes full throttle and **** hits the fan. There are huge trophy bulls here to be killed. Put in your time, do your scouting, learn how and when to call and you will kill a big trophy 300+ bull.

He'll I guess I should be happy a least I can just buy a tag don't have to pay out the nose to hunt it

I lived in Redding for about 7 years. Loved to hunt bantails up on back bone ridge. Also hunted a lot in the Yolla Bollies...............Still miss the hunting up in that area.
Is .that area a draw area? Would love to go back there some day. I hunted a lot out off of Bowman Road. Up above Platina..............great area.

Nope just get a b zone tag and go but I went to back bone ridge last year did 10 days in the backcountry but it's over run with people now sorry to say but it's shot out at best!

Lots of guys hunted the edges but hardly anyone went into the interior . Some ridges were foot hunting only.........................Lots of Boone and Crocket heads came out of there. Talked with one guy who hunted it alone and over the years took four B&C bucks......................saw one that went 161

Ya we parked in hobo gulch camp ground and hunted hard for 10 days cuz I had been told the same thing but we only saw small bucks and a few bears but nothing worth packing out the 12 miles we went in.

The thing about the Yolla Bollies is that other than Black Rock lake there are no lakes up there. That's the thing that attracks Hikers to wilderness area's. Show me a wilderness with lots of lakes like the Marble Mts and there will be tons of people up there. That's the thing about the Trinity Mts...............yet I would bet that very few people, that is no hunters venture up into the Bollies.........................The thing about any area is that once you get off some distance from the main trails that's when you start running into the bigger bucks. I've done several Drop Camps in Nevada and each time the outfitter would take us into area's where we would ride through places with no trails, cross country. The result was that we would often see over 25 bucks a day. Deer like being in area's that are isolated its just that most of us when Back Packing find it hard to hike into area's with no trails.......................lightbulb

This year will be the first year I don't have a kid in sports during hunting season. However, I am currently dealing with major medical problem, and my immediate goal is to survive. However, I am not too worried about it, so I have erased that goal (sort of lol). My real goal is to make it to Elk camp this year in Colorado, with practice runs hiking the and hunting the mountains of the yola bollies and maybe the trinities.

All I can really dream about starting in February is hunting.

I will be posting pictures of my success.

What is your name .................I will be sure to pray for you and your family as this will be hard on everyone...............WE Know what you must be going through as my wife and I have lost two boys.............................so we understand times when we don't have everything under control and life becomes very special.

I grew up in California, and its an amazingly beautiful state. My mom still lives there so we visit every year with the kids. Although I do not think it is the ideal place to hunt for many reasons that others have already said. But because of the remoteness and the elevation, I never had to deal with other people or with any extreme temps. In fact some of the coldest hunts I've been on have been up in the Sierra's.

I backpack hunted for mulies up high in the Sierra's all along the PCT for years when I was in my 20's. Near Hunting Lake, Florence, Edison, and south around Kings Canyon. I can honestly say that is some of the most beautiful country on God's earth. Just not lots of deer. I called my hunts "armed fishing trips"... I would get up to some of the high lakes... Gordon, Harvey, Hooper, (anybody here been to those or heard of them, they are near Florence Lake) and catch Golden Trout. Around Huntington there are bears everywhere... would always run into them, and close.

Even though I rarely shot deer, I loved how I would never see anybody. literally I could go on a week long hunt and see not a single other person. I did meet one guy in my adventures that I still keep in touch with, and let me tell you, he knows that country and shoots deer. I know that country, but not like him, and I did not have the time to dedicate like he does. He still sends me pics of his deer every year. So it can be done.

I live in Colorado now, and have to deal with more people, but LOTS more elk and deer. Although I miss the Sierra's, I don't miss them that much. And my biggest complaint about Colorado, is that it's quite a drive to get to the Pacific Ocean. I grew up fishing and spear-fishing/free-diving and scuba diving all throughout the Monterey Peninsula. But probably another forum for those stories.

I understand how you feel. I live at the base of the Sierra's in Nevada. I have the best of both world's. I love to back pack up into the IceBerg wilderness and fish for trout during sept and oct have the whole place to myself. My wife and I have a nice spot where on Memorial weekend we camp in our wall tent and never see anyone. We can sit by the campfire in the evenings and glass lone Antelope bucks and nice Mule Deer in the Velvet. Chukar hunt during the day and Mule Deer or coyote hunt in the evenings. The best part is you would think that you were hunting out of season because you never see anyone for the whole week.
I've fly fished for Golden trout in the John Muir wilderness and you can catch them on every drift. For those of you who have never seen a Golden Trout they are incredible.
There are so many small Mt ranges in Central Nevada where you can find huge bucks and never see another soul. Even opening day and be all alone for the whole week. I will tell you that my wife and I feel so close to God when we are out there. When it just you and the wilds and you can hear him wisper to you....no outside distractions, no cell phone service and when on a ridge top you can see 100 miles and there is no sign of any man made structures..............just wilderness in every direction.

Several years ago I was in Bishop for the trout festival. First time I ever saw a golden trout. I went up to lake you could drive to try and catch some, but there were people everywhere.

It's on my bucket list. Maybe it will be a small trip this summer with the wife to catch a few, take some pictures, and let them go.
