If you were getting a custom rifle built for the sole purpose of a stone sheep hunt (in grizz territory) and wanted to have 600 yard reach, what caliber would you go with?

I do handload/reload, but have heard some stores lately of ammunition/luggage getting lost, so part of me thinks it is wise to go with something a store in BC is going to carry

well your guide should be there for grizz trouble, and you will go to jail if you shoot a grizz there unless you are ripped up a bit

6.5 something for me. 6-7mm anything would be good but the 6.5 just offers a nice blend. I'd either take a creed or a prc. If you asked to me go right now I'd grab my prc and off we'd go.

The guides do not carry any kind of weapon from what I was told. My wife will be with me as well, so I will not leave our fates to someone else.

In my only sheep hunt so far in the NWT (where all guides carried a 45-70) we had several grizzly encounters....there would be lots of times where the guide was 150+ yards away from me. When you are that far apart there is not much they can do even if they do have a weapon, not to mention they may not even hear you call out in the wind. Got to look out for yourself.

I agree, let the guide worry about bears! Why no short actions listed? I would think something in the 6.5 PRC - 7 SAUM range would make a great sheep gun

I do customs bighorn actions and proof shoulder fit barrels you pick the stock trigger ect and you can put it to gather your self in say 30-60 mins when you have all the parts there easy also you can switch barrels and cals in 20-60 mins at home

Take a good old 300 win mag. It will take care of everything just fine......you'd be surprised how many grizz are killed with a 300 every year, so it has the chops for that if needed...

Shoot the most gun you are good with. I like the 375 RUM, have killed whitetail with it, butI have not walked up a mountain with it: too old now for that and a $50k hunt is not in my budget

Thanks for the replies. I already have a 270, 300 win and a 7 mag, and all are contenders but all are also between 8-9#, so I am considering getting a NULA, Proof, etc...something lighter....and was wondering about a different caliber...

I would have Randy Selby build a 300 weatherby mag.
With a nice muzzle break.
