Gday
A lot more to come on this subject yet but one I thought why not put some of this data already obtained for people to start to digest a little & more importantly if anyone has a simpler method I'm all ears as this is so time consuming & pain in the butt to do & rather shoot critters anyday 🤪but on a positive note these autopsies are some of the easiest I've ever done 🤪🤣🤣

Anyway it's one that ultimately I started to ✅on & ultimately wanted to find a design in a pill that is superior in a in brush situation where impacting foliage sticks twigs branches even trees on running shots
But my ultimate goal is to try & work a Jess bullet out for elephant & no one makes such a pill that I know of

The woodleigh hydro & the ceb #13 are pretty darn good all ready @ lessening the occurrence of a tumbling pill after a branch or like is impacted but can be improved Imo so that's what I've been working on for a while now but more on that later once I complete that data if anyones interested here I'll put it up also but the first lot I gathered I thought let's put it up before I file it away in my data sheets

So first 2 calibers I did were 224 &6.5 & 2 different systems of green twigs & dry twigs upto about 3/8of a inch in diameter but most around a 1/4

The cardboard target was placed 10 ft behind twigs

pills used were & I just went centre of blue dot & if under 2 in off that aimpoint I just called it good & rated NA ( not applicable)
224cal
hammer 33sh NA x2
Nosler 40gr BT NA x2
Sierra blitz king 50 gr 2x 2in
sellier & ballot 55gr NA x2
Hornady sp 55gr NA x2
Taipan 70 gr sp NA x2

6.5 cal
80hht hammer 1xNA 1x18inces
85hh hammer NA x2
116apex NA x2
123 apex 1x4inces 2x NA
123 eldm 1x4inces 1x10 inches
125 McGuire hp NA x2
125 McGuire sf NA
135Atip 1x2inces 1 x NA

Now the more important part imo is the tumbles & what seemed to matter the most on the green twig tests was if the pill hit dead centre of the twig or on the side
Dead centre impact less tumbles side impact greater tumbles saw

Anyway that's a bit to chew on for now I'll get to the rest when time permits

Cheers

Gday fordy! Your test is similar to a test that a gunwritter performed, back in the '70's - I think, a mite before your time.

If I recall, he made a wooded box, drilled rows holes in the box making a "staggered" pattern, inserting wooden dowel rods….. so a bullet passing through must hit a dowel.

Again if I'm remembering correctly, highly unlikely due to my mental decline……it seems that smaller caliber bullets with a higher rotational speed maintained their original path better than large bore bullets with a much slower rotational speed.

His findings went against everything that I wanted to believe…..so I ignored his findings!

I sought "compromise"…..a medium bore cartridge, of moderately high velocity and moderate rotational speed!

You know me well enough …..I just can't shoot "small bore" cartridges and look at myself in the mirror! 😁 memtb

Fordy However, my above post in no way helps you with your situation…..unless you want to start shoot'n big stuff with a varmint cartridge! 😉 memtb

Yep I'm in 🤣
nothing like changing it up for some fun 🤪

Cheers

Gday back to the deflection part although the above is somewhat along the same lines 🤣

I'll put up the hard /dry stick target tests I did later but here's one that was caught on video & resulted in a deer running off & the look of how'd I miss that occurred 🤣🤣

It's only ever a matter of seeing the wood in the trees guys 😜

That's the 3rd time we done that on my hunting property that year & usually happens once or twice a year & we always follow up do grid patterns for around 50 yard if we can't follow tracks & look for blood no blood we believe we are good at the miss but lookout for bird activity later that day or next

If bloods found & on 2 occasions it has & we've recovered both those deer 1 was found dead from a liver / gut shot the next day ( birds gave location away) but meat had gone past used by date 😢
The other we now use the drone to scour the vacinity if this occurs & secured that one relatively quickly 😇

Cheers

Ps memtb watch this space on the 375 as I'm going to catch some pills off a bit of data I gained on these deflections initially & I believe catching them may give us some ideas on the better suited pills 🤷‍♂️🤞which may make you want to take notice of these this time 😜🤣
