Same load. 44.5grns RL19 147ELD-M

This group was a surprise. It was just put together to warm up the barrel and find my 500yrd zero for load development.

One mans "turd" can be another's nugget of "gold"!!!. I have been shooting 200-300 yard Egg Shoots for over a dozen years, well over 50 matches. Initially, in Factory Class, 1st-3rd place was invariably won by the Remington 700's with scores of 8-12 out of 15. For the last 6-8 years, just about every match has been won by a Savage with perfect 15/15 scores with a pool chalk tie breaker required. Custom barreled Savages have won greater then 50% of the custom barreled matches. For a while, Savage caught wind of the growing use of their rifles in this competition and began offering special deals to Factory Class, First Place winners. I managed to get a some wins and have a few Savages(even a blind squirrel finds a nut once in a while!). While I own several custom/semi-custom rifles, I have developed a great respect for these rifles. I have a couple of 22 Rimfires(for long range), a 6.5x284 LRH, 260 LRP, and a 22-250 Predator. They have all proven to be accurate, reliable, and consistsnt over a several year period. Some examples: top photo; 260 LRP(my current egg shooter-3 shots at 100 yards), 2nd: 22LR mk2 TR, 3rd:6.5x284 LRH.

Good shooting. We want to try the 300yd egg challenge and the 1000yd milk jug.

With my ultimate goal of perfecting my LR hunting skills, Egg shooting has become one of my favorite forms of competitive shooting. It has contributed quite a lot to refining my reloading and shooting skills. Considering an egg at 300 yards, "every" shot has to be .5MOA(size of an egg), under pressure of a time limit, distraction from other shooters firing right next to you, and mostly, understanding and determining the effects of "wind". A mis-called 3MPH wind can throw you off 3".....a clean miss with even the most optimized of loads. It seems easier then it really is. Mostly, no matter where I go, the Egg shooters are a friendly, light hearted crowd that always welcomes newcomers, regardless of experience.

Here's my Savage "build" rifle I put together for 300 and 600 yard bench rest....

X-Caliber 1/7 twist 6BRX barrel, Savage target action, Rifle Basix trigger and lo-boy stock bought from the 6br forum slightly used.

The scope is now on another rifle, and this one now has a Nightforce 12-42 on it.

Here is my latest two...most likely many of you have seen this pair...

In the back is my 6.5x284 built on a Savage Axis, the fore ground is my wife' 6.5 Creedmoor. Her's is built on a Model 12 SA...

I call them "His and Her's" Savage rifles!

I've shot a three shot group with the Axis 6.5x284 at 600yds that is unreal for me. 3.5 to 4".

The Creedmoor has just barely been broken in. So it doesn't have much range time on it.

I say do it. I'm "poor" compared to some of these guys and therefore frugal. I have 6.5 Creedmoor with a green mountain blank that shoots awesome for less than $1200. It's got cheap glass, a GRS stock, and the GM barrel. I cannot afford $2000 scopes, $400 mounts, $1100 stocks nor $1200 bare actions. So savage prefits or Remage setups are for me. I'm looking for affordable accuracy not the smoothest action possible that tend to run $1000 +. I doubt with the time I have available that I can even shoot the difference between my sub $1500 savage and a $4500 custom. I want a full up custom rifle but it's just not in the cards for me right now.

I think stockys stocks runs combo specials of some kind for Proof barrels and stocks.

Like you I am "poor" compared to some here. I started with a twenty-five year old Savage. It has a Sharp Shooter trigger, I think. Did my first barrel swap with a Criterion barrel for $420. (It was an impulse buy. I wanted one that day and it was the first one available.) Used a Stocky stock for another $200 and bedding for another $100. I pickup up a used Nightforce for $750 and used Burris Signature rings on Weaver mounts. The first an only three shot groups were 3/8" and 1/8" at 100 yards. I am looking forward to checking different loads in this "turd". So for about $1,500 we have a very good shooter.

DANG Rich...you guys are rolling in the dough! I'd have to put it on paper, but I'm not sure I have $1.500.00 in both rifles combined (less scopes) that are pictured above!

Both actions combined were less than $500.00, both stocks were new under $400.00, one recoil lug, 2 bases with 2 sets of rings were well under $200.00, both barrels $380.00 on the nose (plus one barrel came with dies and one hundred pieces of Lapua brass of which most was unfired)...

That's $1,480 and the actions, stocks and base sets were rounded up. The barrels cost was o=to the penny, both nearly new 100ish rounds threw both...my actual cost is a bit lower that my total.
