Building a Custom hunting rifle 300 win input

Hi Everyone:

I am in the process of building a custom 300 win mag. I plan to go on a hunts for some larger big game such as elk, moose, grizzly, and caribou. I have a ruger m77 mkII but don't trust the accuracy of this gun to go on these hunts. I am thinking of building a lighter weight rifle as I don't plan on shooting at much past 600 yds.

I have been researching either blueprinting a rem 700 stainless action and adding a M16 extractor or just go buy a Stiller Predator. I planning on using a Krieger , Brux, or Benchmark barrel at 26 in finished with a Vias brake. The contour I was planning was a #4 Heavy Sporter.

I am really up in the air with choice of stocks. I have some bell and Carlson stocks and an HS Precision on my rifles right now. I had a bad experience with an HS precision and had to dremel the bedding block in order to fit action and add some thick bedding to square the action to the stock. I would really like a Mcmillan Edge as they are only 22-24 oz. The Grayboe stocks look good but heavier at 2.5 lbs. I want a tough stock that is fairly lightweight. I worried that the bell and carlsons are on the weak side when hunting in cold weather and prone to breaking if it takes a fall. I want to pack around a heavy gun around the mountains.

The scope I have chose is a 3-18x44 luepold with a moar reticle and cds internal dial.

I looking for input on some of the selections good, bad, ugly.

Nice start and exellent choice of chambering ... I'd go with a Stiller action or other similar custom action and get a side port type muzzle brake over the radial Vais. Whichever barrel you decide on, I'd consider the 1:9" for the heavy high BC bullet offerings.

I've got a Model Seven in 7 SAUM with a B&C Medalist stock on it. I love that stock. I wish they offered one a little lighter, but I don't find it to be overly heavy. My rifle weighs a little over 8 lbs all loaded up with 4 extra rounds, sling, Leupold steel rings and bases and a VX3 3.5-10x50 scope. I toted it in WY this year in 10" of snow at an average of about 9500'. The weight of the rifle never bothered me.


If I were you and wanted a 300 magnum, I would buy a Model Seven in 300WSM and replace the stock and trigger.


Don't worry about the short 22" barrel. Mine is 22" and it throws 160 grain Accubonds 2900fps with good accuracy.

I am leaning on the Stiller. I would think I would need 1:9 twist to handle the 210 accubond or would I be alright with 1:10?

I would like to stick with the 300 win. I am just not a fan of short mags for hunting purposes. I have entertained a higher quality factory but want stock of choice and action. I have some custom varmit rifles with rem actions as well as factory rems. I just wanted to go the custom barrel so I knew I would a have a accurate rifle. I change out my triggers on all rifles to Timneys or the older rems rugers have been tuned. Thanks

For primarily hunting with some range use, I'm a big fan of the McMillan A3 Sporter. I'm not sure how light I would want a 300WM, even with a brake. And for the brake, unless it is a bench gun, I would strongly recommend going with side ports only and not a radial. I'm sure the Edge stocks are great if the brake will bring recoil back into the acceptable range. I can't speak from experience.

I would (and did) just go with the Stiller Predator.

I think I am sold on the Stiller action after researching blueprinting, custom handle, M16 extractor, recoil lug costs of materials and install. I would be looking at about $850 with the Stiller at $940. The stock is probably the next choice I have to make???

1st choice Mcmillan Edge-lightweight high quality but spendy 22-24 oz
2nd choice Mcmillan Hunter-midweight high quality spendy -32 oz
3rd choice Grayboe outlander somewhat heavy good quality nice price-42 oz
4th choice Bell and Carlson Alaskan middle of road quality nice price-32oz
5th choice Bell and Carlson Medalist -40oz

The donor vs custom is a good thread. I have a Savage custom with Douglas barrel reamed to a 6 dasher. It shoots real well but I am not confident in Savage products if I am on a once in a lifetime hunt or a dangerous situation.

I'm guessing you erred when you said that you do want to pack a heavy rifle around in the mountains.

If your M77 has a tang safety I would get rid of it and get a Hawkeye action or M70 center feed to build off of but you certainly can't go wrong with the full custom actions on your list.

Your scope is great although I very much prefer the 50mm Objective and really like the illumination on the new VX-6 Illuminated models.

As for your choice of calibers, even though my personal favorite is the 7mm STW I've always said, "The .300wm is never the wrong answer". There's really just not much of anything you can't do and do very well with the .300wm.

Barrel wise I really love the look and accuracy of the Remington 5R Gen 2 although for a mountain rifle I'd probably want to stick to something like the traditional Model 70 Classic Stainless. I don't know if Remington has patented their 3 wide, deep groove fluting that they put on the 5R Gen 2 but if they haven't and you want to lighten a heavier contoured barrel that's the fluting I'd use.

I'm also becoming a big, big believer in the 5R Rifling for both velocity and accuracy.

Stock wise I'd look at the McMillan with an edge fill.

Because the stock extractor on a 700 Remington is crap and probably the most prone to failure of any manufacturers factory extractors.

I would however go with the Sako extractor over the M16 extractor because the M16 type extractor is more prone to failure. We always considered it the weakest link in the M16 platform when I was in the service.

My 300 WM is one of my most accurate guns. Borden action,#3 Brux, McMillan Game Scout,Jewel trigger,Holland brake topped with a NF SHV and Tally's. Finished at 10 lbs 2 oz. Personally I would first look at the 215 Berger. I am sure the Accubond is a good bullet but the 215 Berger and 300 WM are made for each other.
