Budget Gun Input

I'd really watch twist rates, a 1-10 twist rate give a guy the most options. A 308 Win with a 215 Berger is really amazing, I would not go back to a lesser bullet for any reason.
In order to maintain a budget you can't be swapping major parts, handle every one you have on a list and check for how they fit you and check the triggers since we're all difference.

What's your drop at longer distances?

My 210 VLD load drops 437.4" at 1000, with a 100 yard zero. Holding 1,286 fps and 771 fpe.

My 168 load drops 362.8" while holding 1,247 fps and 580 fpe.

600-Yard Heart Shot with a Savage and Factory Ammo!
In our Shooter's Forum, Ron explained that this group was actually shot with factory ammo… from a Savage no less:
"This will be one that may be hard to believe for some but it is my Savage 12 FTR .308 and I was shooting 168gr Federal Gold Medal Match. The stock has been modified for benchrest shooting with a 3″-wide shoe on the forward stock. I do not shoot this rifle very often as most of my time is spent with my 30″ Brux barreled 6BR working up loads and shooting. That day I had put the scope back on it and was sighting it in at 600 yards and those were my last three shots after my last scope correction and then I was out of ammo. This rifle has always been very accurate. The weather was good, no wind or mirage."

Holy smokes! You gotta love them Savages ... gun)gun)gun)

I'm not pushing them as hard as I could at 2432 fps, at 5600 ft elevation, 100 yard zero, at 1000 yards with a 10 mph full value wind I'll need 33.7 MOA and 5.5 on wind with 1522 fps impact velocity. At 1535 I need 68.5 MOA and 9.2 on wind with 1123 fps impact. Accuracy is amazing. Drop really means nothing but the 215 will carve and easy 1 moa of the windage!

Thank you sir!

I guess that seems pretty consistent with mud's numbers depending on your hand loads. I was more just interested to see what kind of drop you were seeing with the .308 and heavier bullets.

I have had two savages and still have one i had a savage modle11 hog hunter in 308 and at 200 yards i could hit 308 brass with my reloads all i done was put a scope on it i also have my 22-250 i love both of them i got rid of the 308 to a friend of mine cause he needed a gun i now have the rem700 in 308 to be honest i think my savage was the better shooter even with factory ammo and it only had a 20" barrel but reason i went with Remington this go round is i plan on taking it further than i did my savage and there is alot more stuff for the remington and its alot easier to find than the savage i hope this helps hearing this from someone who owns both brands

I have never had a Savage, but my first long gun was a 700 BDL Varmint Special in .243, purchased in 1968. It shot very well, and I wish I could still lay hands on it. What I find interesting is that nobody here has mentioned the Savage 11 Long Range Hunter. It comes with a 26" barrel, 1/10 twist with a brake, adjustable-comb stock, and can be had for under $1000. In .308, with anything from 150 to Berger 210's, in factory ammo, it should be good for anything up to elk, at up to and beyond 500 yards, no question. Have I missed anything?

I'm not sure how hard they are to find but if you can I vote the Stephens 200 savage. Then immediately Change the stock and adjust the trigger. I guess its been a few years back now, but when I got it, the rifle was $350 the stock was a laminate for about $225 and about $1 for a piece of music wire to take the tigger down to 2.5#. For about $600 you have a decent rifle that will shoot as good as any other savage or Remington and have a stock of your choosing. Mine is in 243 win with a 284 win barrel on the way. The current barrel just recently gave out on me after about 2400 hot rounds. It used to do 3/4" or less at 200 yards. Though like I said, I'm not sure how hard it would be to find the rifle since Im pretty sure they quit making them a few yeas ago and I got mine about 5 years ago.
