What you have suggested will work in most cases. The 3006 has lost its popularity since there are better suited calibers for TRUE long range shooting and hunting. Keep the ranges in your/gun capability and you can have a lot of fun.

Thanks for all the great info. Are there any leupolds that fall under 500 with MOA that would have the magnification to reach out even if it lacked some of the bells and whistles that the Vortex did? Thanks

You should be able to find the HS-T under $500. Here is a site that carried them for $420. They are sold out now, but might be worth a call to see when they'll get them back in. Eagle Valley Outfitters Magnified 11-24x

I got my PST through them and they are great people, very easy to work with.
