Brown Bear with a 358 STA.

358 STA's are all custom so may vary a little in internal geometry but I have used Rel 22, IMR 4350, Rel 19 and IMR 4831 in this cartridge and all produced velocities meeting or exceeding those same bullet weights from a 340 Weatherby.

The Weatherby had a 26" barrel and the STA a 24" barrel. Recoil and blast was also equal.

Should be a relatively easy task to work up a load.

Yes sir, this rifle was built by Hart from Nescopec Pennsylvania. It's a beautiful piece of work for sure. I loaded up some accubonds earlier for him for elk but he ended up using a .300 win mag. He's a good friend of mine and I'm just as excited for his hunt as he is. Thanks again.

358 sta is a hammer and at that weight; a frames, accubonds, partitions, Barnes.... all are gonna be fine.

You will never go wrong with Accubonds. I use the 260g Accubond on Water buff @ 3000fps out of a 375 Weatherby, impacts are phenomenal and visibly heavy. The 358STA would be similar.
Barnes are tough and most often you don't need a heavy to get similar performance to other bonded cup/core bullets.

I shot my 9' brown bear at about 40 yards with a 416 Hoffman and 350 gr Barnes X-bullet. Muzzle velocity about 2400 fps. The bear stood up, did the biting dance and fell down dead. In addition, I shot a 500 pound black bear with a 300 Wby Mag with a 150 gr TTSX at near 3550 fps muzzle velocity at 65 yards. The bear ran about 20 yards and expired. The bullet did not exit the brown bear but it did exit the black bear. But, neither bear lived more than an few seconds after the shot. Barnes bullets work very well when placed in the vitals.

Yep, those from that region are often "welfare cases"…….other areas they have to work for a living! memtb

Isn't that for sure, the largest one I've taken or see taken in Montana was a fall bruin and he went 416 lbs. He was a bruiser, I called him into 8 yds but couldn't get a shot. Called him back in a short bit later that night and took him just at dark at 90 yds

He was my first bruin that went 20"

The largest so far taken here in Pennsylvania was in the early in-line season weighed in at 678.

That's this year, heaviest taken here ever was in 2010 and weighed 875.

The black bear was shot in Saskatchewan, Canada (see my LRH post "Northern Saskatchewan Black Bear")

I like Barnes when you want something dead! Lots of options, but they make great bullets. That brownie to the left took 2 shots. First one under the chin looking at me and the second as he turned to dive into some alders. the second made a hole right behind the shoulder thru the heart. went 12 yards. barnes 270 gr LRX....
