Blackdog - No, there was no equiptment and just two of us. We were flown in and dropped off in a Super Cub, we were over 100 miles from the closest road and we did not have any type of winch or come a long. We did not even have any rope!
We first floated the bear down the creek a bit to a spot where there was some firm ground (lots of swamp around us). On our first attempt, we had the bear on his back and we both grabbed the bear by his wrists. Using our legs we started tugging moving the bear about 1/4" to 1/2" at a time onto the bank. When we got him up about 1/2 way up the bank, we went to his butt and tried to roll him up onto the bank. In doing so, the entire bear rolled back into the river! We were not happy campers. We figured that was it and we would be taking glory photos and skinning in the river so we started taking photos.
After about 10 to 15 minutes of photos we though we would try one more time. This time I came up with the idea of smashing down the bank into a bit of a ramp instead of pulling the bear up the sharp edge. So we smashed the bank as best we could using our boots but still had a steep angle. So we began pulling again and got him about 1/2 way up the bank. Then we got on his side and again using our legs began the rolling process. This process is both of us grab the bear on his side down low and push moving him up about an inch. Then one person gets lower on the bear for a better grip and we both push again, moving the bear about an inch again then the other guy drops down for a lower grip and repeat, and repeat, and repeat.....
Finally he rolled over onto the bank! HIGH FIVES BABY!!!!
All in all, it took us right at 1 hour and 45 minutes to get him out of the creek but it was worth the effort. Got some great photos and he was much easier to skin out of the water.
Then right as we were starting to skin him I look up and there is another bear, 20 yards away standing up, hair flaired, woofing at us wanting to eat my bear (yes, brown bears will eat other brown bears)
But that's another story....quite the adventure!
