Blue thread loctite on scope rings or not

I am wondering about the heat? Seem that could damage you scope.

Sounds painful. In automotive industry we heat red loctite to 400° & then a puff of smoke when it finally gives up the ghost so to speak.

A little heat is all that is needed, breaks down Loctite. Even the green "bearing" Loctite.

Try nail polish. It doesn't fight back as bad as locktite when you want to remove scope. HTH

Thanks to all. Never to old to learn something new. I only started using blue lictite about a year ago. I really never had that problem of scope coming lose. In reading installation instructions last year it said about using blue lictite. So we did.

I haven't had an issue with blue loctite after twenty years of use. but I'll try that Vibratite. It sounds pretty good to me.

Not adding anything new except personal experience using Blue Locktite on the scope rings. In the past I always used blue Locktite and a torque wrench in the 15-16 in/lb range. Never a problem until a Vortex Viper pst gen 2 stopped tracking. I sent it in and tech support said I overtorqued the tube because of the Locktite. Years ago I used the least expensive rings I could find, but not anymore. No more lapping and no more Locktite with no issues.

Hold the tip of a soldering iron against the head of the screw for 30 seconds. No chance of heating the scope, let alone damaging it.

Used to use blue loctite. No longer do. No scope screws loosening on me yet.

I'd use the purple loctite if I were to use it again. Or maybe fingernail polish.

Don't use anything, part of my cleaning routine includes checking torque on rings, bases and action. Never had an issue yet. Just like anything mechanical if you do the proper PM you will have less issues down the road.

i like the idea of using it on the base, especially with a bolt gun, since those screws can be hard to get to with the scope rings on.

Aluminum stuff is the worst for loosening up.

I use Permatex or Loctite red on all my bases and scope rings with no issues. I rarely have the need change out or adjust the scope but the few times I had to loosen the scope rings when threadlocked, it was no problem. IMO, torque is critical. I had a scope slip once early on and that was enough for me.

The nail polish idea is a good one as is using "patched screws" which have a blob of light threadlocker on the threads.

I look at mount screws loosening up as a symptom of a larger problem. Heavier scopes and heavier recoiling rifles as well as lighter rifles definitely taxes the mounting system. I've used blue and red loctite in the past on base screws, never used it on ring screws. I have had a few heavy recoiling rifles tapped for #8 base screws and went to 6 screw rings, This has eliminated any need for thread locker for me. When I did use it I would clean the threads with a bottom hole tap.
