Ok guys, I had some WD-40 on hand, so I tried it. With a rag, it wasn't working out too well. Then, I remembered a trick my local gunsmith taught me to remove rust spots from a blues barrel: WD-40 and a nickel (coin) pre 1983. Story is that te nickel is harder then rust but softer than the blurring on the barrel.
Well, I just used a nickel and WD-40 and scrapped the gunk off very easily! The barrel looks great! This wasn't fool-proof, as over-working an area can scratch the bluing. It's nice and smooth for an old barrel, and I think a dura-coat finish is in order. Thanks for all of your help! This is a fun little project!
