Best Rifle Out Of The Box Part two

Now that I have done all of the modifications, if Suzie Q were a woman, this is what she would look like! hehe

Do you see that?? That looks like a A1.... :D

A-1 with two big thumbs way UP would be correct!! :D

You guys are AWESOME, thank you for all of your input in helping me putting my Suzie Q together, dream girl now!

I put the Huskemaw Blue Diamond on her because as we all know, a diamond is a girlz best friend!

Well, if you're giving away 700's, look no further for a good home...

I know how you feel... Hell, I probably spent enough money on that Weatherby to buy a Proof Research tube for it... But didn't find out the extent of the problem until it was too late and the money and components were gone.
Trust me, with my friends and family here in the state if I decide to let one go it'd be gone before I could say so here.

We had a local guy here, super nice guy that I've known for years call me a couple of weeks before deer season to ask me to help him diagnose some problems with his new 700 LR (can't remember the exact model). Looking at his brass and his description of serious stuck cases/bolt after firing I told him to send it back along with the ammo and brass.

I think it was late December before he got a replacement. I lent him one of my M70's a 300wm Extreme Weather knowing his season was seriously screwed and he was a very thankful guy. I charged him a dollar a shot for the ammo he used and he still got to fill his freezer.

I think he sold the new replacement rifle to another guy here in town and is going the semi custom route on his next one.

I got a 700bdl 7mm Rem for my 15th birthday and it spent most of it's life at a gunsmith or sitting in Remington's repair shop. I finally had a gunsmith in Houston go over it and he told me the bolt face was wrong and out of square, the action out of square, the barrel tapped out of square and that I'd be better off throwing it in the trash than putting any more money into it.

I Replaced it with a Model 70 Stainless/Boss in the same caliber and refused to by another Remington until probably somewhere around 2005.

As many great rifles and actions as they have put out Remington has also put out a pot load that were crap from day one and they seem to go through periods where they just can't do anything right.

On the flip side I have yet to ever buy a model 70 (all CRF's) that I couldn't get to shoot well very easily and the only one I was really disappointed in was the Extreme Weather model. The barrel was just far lighter than I had expected and that was my fault. A muzzle break and some floating and bedding got it shooting very well in a hurry.

It had a factory flaw though in the safety. There was a burr left in it that made it very difficult to operate at times but a few hours of working lapping compound through it removed it and freed it up nicely. The average guy would have had to send it back or have a gunsmith address the problem but I'm pretty handy with the simple stuff like that.

None of them are perfect so don't feel like you're the only one, I think we've all been there, some of us multiple times.

Definitely. You spend enough time around guns and buy enough of them, you're bound to get a lemon eventually, regardless of brand. Remember, I also had a lemon barrel 700, as well. It was that used .338 WinMag I bought back in mid-2013. I rebarreled it to 7mmRM, and never had another problem out of it.

Next rifle I buy, will be A 100% Custom Rifle. I will never trust an "Out Of The Box" brand name again!
Thinking about this I did some looking around over at GB and a couple of other sites.

You now have essentially a custom rifle and you got their for less than buying a full custom straight up so don't feel too bad.

Lucky Me! lol

As mentioned I replaced the their CRAP Barrel with a 3 contour Wilson barrel, anyone one have an experience with the Wilson Barrels, are they a good barrel???

Thanks, :)

Wilson has been a long time barrel manufacturer producing a wide range of barrel types from low end to custom to individuals as well as being an OEM to several rifle manufacturers. They acquired Cooper Arms a while back and produce the barrels used on their rifles. My Cooper in 6.5x284 which I have owned for about six years has a Wilson custom barrel on it. I don't know the number but it has a .78" diameter at the muzzle, fluted, 26". With about 1000 rounds through it, she still shoots better then .25MOA. It holds its POI cold or warm for at least 60 rounds between cleaning. It has accounted for a few dozen deer, antelope and coyotes, out to 1188 yards. IMO it's a superb barrel!
This is a typical Three shot zero at 100 yards, BTW my rifle also has a Huskemaw 5x20 on it. It had served me well.

Thanks for the insight. My gunsmith uses these barrels on their own custom rifles, know as the Rocky Mountain Rifle. So I am thinking that my barrel is not a low end one, because their rifles are not inexpensive!

Good info, I wasn't aware of that.

By the way Greyfox, you have exceptional taste in scopes. I love my Huskemaw 5-20 x 50 Blue Diamond! When Suzie Q came back home after her adventure sporting her new diamond she gave me a big kiss (or maybe I kissed her) and she promised never to let me down, ever! hehe :D
