Best cartrige for long range target and also for Elk hunting.

I have been shooting long range (1,200 yards) for over 30 years and have became very proficient out to that distance.

I am in no way handicapping myself by using a handgun, especially with the gun and cartridge that I shoot. 2" groups or less at 300 yards from a bench are the norm, and if I cannot get a good solid rest out in the field, under no circumstance will I pull the trigger!

I'm not the best shooter out there and don't claim to be. I just take great pride in my shooting ability, as well as time taken at the loading bench.
Sounds like you have valuable expertise to contribute.

11 pages in and no mention of the exciting new offering from Federal? Their shiny new 7mm Backcountry. To hear marketing on it it's supposed to be the next greatest thing 🙄. Anyone willing to pay their hard earned money on this one to see how it goes as say compared to the subject of the op and the cartridges being discussed?

I was waiting for the two most famous long range cartridges:

1. The 6.5 Manbun
2. .223 w/77TMK

 🤣

For a new gun last year I went with the .300 WinMag. I have a .300 RUM that I love and it is a shooter. It shoots hand loads.
I like my SigCross in .300 WinMag. I do plan on buying a .300 PRC barrel for my Cross maybe later this year. A 6.5 CM is in the works cause I love dinging plate

As opinions vary get what "you" want. Since you do not reload yet, I would look at ammo availability in your area. Friend of mine got a CVA 300 PRC at Christmas that's shooting sub MOA with Berger 205 box ammo.

Gun porn for your viewing pleasure.

7 prc is a great choice. 280 AI offers less recoil, but a little less velocity with the heavier bullets. Also typically holds one more cartridge, sometimes two in the magazine than the magnums. I'll try to post recoil comparisons and ammo availability/cost info today if I get a chance.

A 6.5 AND a similar 30 cal magnum is a great option IF you want two guns. A switch barrel in particular is very slick. However, for the one rifle hunter/target shooter a 7 mm magnum is one of the best options with balanced recoil, trajectory/wind drift, and on game performance. Nothing else comes close IMO.

In fact, I've been hunting and shooting with a 7 Rem Mag Fierce Edge since they came out more than 10 years ago. If I was buying today, it'd be a 7 PRC. There MIGHT be other cartridges that are as good a choice for you, but none better IMO.

280 AI - 13 loads - $2.04 to 5.05 a round

7 PRC - 21 loads - $2.85 to 7.00 a round

As far as a 280 AI rifle, I've been tempted to buy one of these https://weatherby.com/store/model-307-alpine-ct/, but since my last rifle purchase hasn't even arrived yet, my spousal unit says I can't lol.

It's only 6.1 lbs bare, so the lesser recoil of the 280 AI would be an advantage. 280 AI has a good reputation for hand loading and will do better with lighter bullets than the 7 PRC which will further reduce recoil. For target shooting and elk inside 600 yds it's got plenty of jam!

****, now I want one too…

I found this interesting…..and very misleading!

I opened the attachment, and found their write-up and data laughable!

Nowhere is the firearm weight mentioned……as this is a key component in felt recoil computation. The included article also stated that recoil at or above 30 ft/ lbs as "massive" recoil……again laughable. My wife's "non braked" hunting rifle is at 39 ft/lbs. felt recoil which she shoots pretty darn good…….and she ain't a linebacker in the NFL!

Perhaps for some of today's shooters…..30 ft/lbs may be considered "massive". Perhaps this "new breed" of shooters would be more at home on a golf course! memtb
