Best caliber for deer out to 800 yards

If you want a shorter action, the .300 WSM is also a good choice.

If you were to remove the limits on caliber of choice I would have included the .264 Win mag. **(.264) That is a 6.5** American vs Canadian math. Kinda like 7mm/.284 or 7.62/.308 or 6.8/.277 or 5.56/.223 etc.

The two I use most frequent for that exact purpose are the 270WSM shoving 140Accubonds at 3100(factory Win-70 fwt) & my custom Win-70, 300WSM shoving 180Accubonds at 3100+

I've had outstanding performance with both.

Yes, I realized after I posted that part of my post made no sense. I wasn't thinking. I apologize and definitely know the .264 Win mag is a 6.5 MM, in fact it was the first 6.5 to be popular in the US.

I take it you don't believe in internal ballistics in a rifle or you wouldn't call a 300 win an inferrier caliber. I did my research on the calibers I asked about.

Hawks, 1st of all, I was just poking a little fun. Gotta laugh some times. 2nd, if you follow the post I was referencing the choice of a 6.5 creedmoor as a long range deer cartridge, not the 300 WM of which I have and love. But for clerification, if you take the 6.5 with a 129 gr.sp going 3100 fps it will have aprx. 1200 lbs @ 500 yards. A 270 WSM using a 140 gr AB going 3100 fsp will give you close to 1500 lbs @ 500 yards...thus my "bummer" statement. Obviously we all have our favorites and most are really good choices, specially if you can shoot straight and hit what your aiming at. Have a good day.

Get a Rem. sendero in either 7mm rem mag or 300 win mag put some good glass on it and start practicing. Should be all you need.

AGREE!! HAWKES- the caliber is not as important as having rifle/scope/ ammo that is capable. remington sendero( or win laredo) and a leup 6.5-20 are the answer to most questions on lrh.

I've deer hunted with a 6.5x55 (139gr) for the past 6 yrs and have had great results.. I will say that i do also agree with the 7mm.. Whatever you decide just practice and remember shot placement is the real key.

I am building a 6.5 saum or 6.5 in a necked down 7mm short action ultra mag case using the 140 Berger hybrids. Should be good and have sufficient energy to kill just about anything in North America from ranges of 100 -1200 yards. Shot placement is everything.

I absolutley have no idea all the shots where I hunt are 250 yards and in. I use a 7mm-08. No idea what it takes to shoot 600-800 yds.

300 Win Mag works great. I shoot Hornady 190 BTSP with H1000 & it will make a little cloverleaf at 100 yards if I do my part. Absolutely crushes black bear, deer & elk.

I love my 300WM..
Savage 110 action with a factory 112 barrel.
Dropped a doe at 720yds 2 years ago with it, 210gr Berger at 2875 or 2925, cant rem which.
It works.
Good scope and a good load will go a long ways. Practice, practice, practice and practice some more..

I agree with the 6.5 Creedmore it's a good choice. That said I also like and shoot a 243AI, 6.5 Grendel AR, 7-08, 308, 280, 30-06 and 300Win Mag. I've shoot deer with them all. The 300WM smokes them. I've taken a couple with the 243AI and it's capable of 800 yards if the conditions are common. The 7-08 has taken elk and deer to 650 yds with one shot kills. I'm currently varmint hunting with the 6.5 Grendel and have killed coyotes and jackrabbits to 600 yards.

Research and than buy what YOU feel fits your needs.

I would agree with the creedmoor as well. And you cant go wrong with a 6.5-284. My wife shot a nice muley buck at 675 yards last year with a 308.

I think the 6.5x47 Lapua with 120dn prvi partizan bullet. It has 512 bc and it's around 3050fps.gun)

The main thing is shot placement, over and over again. If you can't hit the target it does not matter, Your gun needs to shoot a good 4" group at that range or better.
