Barrel chamber and fitting price

I am picking one up Thursday(Weatherby not a Tikka) that a local smith did for me. He also threaded for muzzle break for $350. Did a beautiful job.

Lots of guys are offering shouldered Tikka prefits. No barrel nut. Looks like carbon six even has a 30-284 reamer and you can have a carbon shouldered prefit for 695.00. No experience with their prefits.

Seems like $300-$400 is the current going rate I see.

I think it would be a fair question what steps in this job make it more complex than the normal $350 thread and chamber...

Have you test fit dummy rounds to a magazine? Seems like you should try to confirm feeding....or at least mag fit.

I've found other people's reports of them converting their Tikka to a 6.5-284 and just using the '06 size mag and they say it works well

I saw that. I have no interest in carbon barrel though, and they use mcgowen barrels which I've not heard great things about.

That would be nice!

I think I'll be going with Brad Stair though; he already has one and can bead blast whereas with Preece I'd have to cerakote to match

I spoke with a local Smith on the phone today inquiring about having a new barrel put on my Tikka.

He said for removing the factory barrel, chambering, threading the tenon, turning the shank to fit the receiver bevel, and putting the new barrel on will cost $600 not including the barrel price. Bead blasting would be an extra $100.

He also said he would have to make a relief cut in the factory barrel to get it off, and also wasn't sure that a 284 case would feed from a Tikka magazine properly, even though he has worked on tikkas.

He seemed very nice and honest. He said it costs so much because the threads on the Tikka barrels are metric and it takes him about 4 times longer to thread them than other barrels.

But should I pay that much just to have a new barrel fitted to my rifle? I would think if he's charging that much he'd get my factory barrel off without ruining it.

I thought a barrel chambering and fitting wouldn't be more than $400ish.
just get a Tikka pre fit from proof and do it yourself, https://proofresearch.com/barrels/tikka-pre-fit/

I chambered a Tikka last night in 260AI. Threads are 16 TPI not metric. Tenon is .998. You can either cut .2" off the front of the action or turn the blank down to 1.125". $600 should be the price including the barrel. I don't think the 284 case will feed real good either.

Wow people prices have really gone up. My last two barrels were $450.00 for Brux SS. One installed and other profit sent to my door.......But its only money and if the Gunsmith is a great Smith you can't pay too much for a job well done! Why? because you can't get your money back on a bad job!

Northland Shooting Supply/NSS has prefit barrels, action wrenches, barrel vice, go no go gauges and a recoil lug system that works very well. I did a remage prefit CF 7mag 8T barrel with NSS tools and lug and it shoots sub half moa. Call James at 763 682 4296. He'll set you up. Problem you may have is getting your barrel off. Heard the Tikka's can be a bear to get off. Am about to do a second rifle now. This time all I need is a lug and guages for this caliber plus parts. Invest in the tools and you will always have them. And once you do one, you'll never want to buy a factory rifle again. It takes 5 minutes set the headspace.

A good barrel it's going to be $300-350. So if I interrupted the OP that is $300 for the barrel and $300 for the fitting/chambering.

The guys above are correct, threads on a Tikka aren't metric. Price sounds reasonable. I've seen as low as $200 and as high as $450 to fit and chamber.

After reading all the posts that discuss the Tikka barrel threads being TPI and not metric as the 'smith claimed, I have to wonder if that guy really IS a decent 'smith or if he really HAS rebarreled one of those rifles.
Sounds to me to be a marginally-experienced 'smith that is over-selling his work time, padding the job/hours to ensure he has enough time to actually complete the job.
And literally destroying your old barrel to remove it?!? That's unconscionable unless someone spot welded the original barrel to the action which would be unheard of IMHO. But that's just me.
As a minimum I'd be asking a LOT of shooters in the area and googling that 'smith to see if there are any bad reports of him, and not just for his cost per job.
And as others have already said, the job shouldn't cost what he is asking UNLESS that takes into account the price of the replacement barrel.
Even then, ruining your original barrel to remove it?
Hmm.
Me thinks I'd be looking elsewhere but YMMV.
Good Luck and keep us posted on the outcome and ultimate resolution WRT how that Sweetheart gun shoots.
