Bang for your buck!

If I were going to play the steel game regularly then 7-08 pushing 140's. For more punch, 7SST

In .30 with nostalgia then .308 Norma. In something Late Model then .300WSM

If you are to pick a cartridge right now in the .284 or .308 offerings and wanted the most bang for your buck (efficiency/hard hitting/hunting & steel) what are you choosing?

*** keeping "factory ammo or barrel life" out of the equation ***
Non-magnum: .280/AI; .308 Win/.30-06
Magnum: 7MM RM; .300 WM/WSM

Plenty of shelf factory ammo.

NOT---- No replacement for displacement!!! You don't buy these big guns to save money, ya buy em to shoot stuff a LOOOOONG way off!!! đź‘Ť
I've been shooting with guys running 30-378 roy rifles. They topped out around 3300 fps with 180's; I suppose 3400 fps might be on tap with newer powders. I run my light load (300rum)at 3280 fps with rl25 and 180's. I run a slightly heavier charge to 3320 fps. I've seen 3400+ fps with IMR 5010 and 180's safely also. There is less than 100 fps between the cartridges in the rifles I've seen unless you want to employ a large hammer to open the bolt.

Not sure what you mean by efficiency??
Hard hitting is really gonna depend on what range your hitting at but heavier and faster equals harder.

30 cal
300NMI: Fast and accurate. Mag feeds the heavies. My personal choice aswell.
300 rum
300WM
300prc
300wsm
30-378 gets a mention but only because there's still some cult members that havent seen the light yet.

.284cal
7mm-300nmi
7rum
28nos
7 dakota
7prc
7rem mag Classic thats hard to beat with rl26 and 180vld at 3000fps

With new powders like rl26 and high bc bullets any one of these meets all 3 of your criteria.
Some perform well in shorter barrels while others shine in longer barrels.

Hard to argue with a 195 grain .284 launched at 3200ish for down range performance.
A 250 atip at 3050ish is as good as it gets but gonna be hard to do out of a hunting weight/length rifle.

This is why we need so many rifles! No such thing as one that does it all!

Got that Vector Optics scope you sold me sighted in on my new 338-378 Weatherby. Shot a doe at about 265 yards according to my rangefinder. 185 gr Hornady bullet—just for the velocity, 3400fps according to Nosler. She was dead before the sound got to her. Hit behind the shoulder and out behind the off shoulder. No meat loss, and yes, I did take the tenderloins.

I couldn't recommend this caliber any higher. Very little recoil even with 250gr bullets. (heaven rifle)

Call me some time. I miss talking to you!
