ballistics of 7mm-08 & 6.5x284

Well I was using realistic info that I would use personally. I don't see a 200 fps difference being that close with similar bc numbers. I guess I will run the numbers again when I get a chance. I have a little time with a 7 08 due to a couple of buddies having them for their kids. Nice rifles.

260 rem ,140s at 2750 ,mild recoil great bullet selection better bc.s than 7mm vs bullet wieght pbobably a little more common than the 6.5x284. Kinda surprised nobody s mentioned it.


I would choose the 6.5x284 over the 7mm-08 if you reload if not 7mm-08 might be the way to go, never have seen 6.5x284 at wal mart but you never know. If you like the 7mm. 280 rem could be a good canidate too. more case capacity vs the 7mm-08 and not so much of a barrel burner as the 6.5x284

Ran some numbers on the Amax. I have no experience with the Amax and hunting and did not know that bullet is showing a .625 BC. However, you can not buy these over the counter. You will be using the 139's. I have to giggle a bit at Hornady claiming those will fly at 2950. They also claim my 204 with 40's will fly 3900. They are 300 fps off that mark so who know's.

140 VLD is .613.

So, given the 7-08 shoots 2750 as a comparison, it does come close in wind MOA and down range energy at the target. Difference in elevation is not all that close....there is a 4.2 MOA difference or 42 inches.

I think I would still choose the 7-08 for the kids and wife or the 280 is nice too. My brother had a 280 and it was a nice rifle.

Thank you for validating my point. You're right when it comes to the trajectory. Faster loads especially with bullets of similar BCs are always flatter. To be honest I have not looked at a trajectory chart/column in years. In long range hunting since the availability of reliable and accurate range finders, there are 3 numbers that are of any concern for downrange performance. 1: bullet energy, 2: Velocity for expansion 3: windage. Windage is the real challenge. Drops are easy. Be it 200" or 350" at 1k, they're both equally as easy to adjust for as long as you know the drops. It's the windage that requires More forgiveness.

No, a 284 win (ballistic twin of the 280 rem) will only push a 162 grain bullet at around 2850-2900 fps from a 26" barrel. I have a 7mm-08 and a 6.5x284, i am building a 284 win to replace the 7mm-08 if that tells you anything.

If i had to choose between 7mm-08 and 6.5x284, 6.5x284 HANDS DOWN. I feel to take it long range with a 7mm, anything less than a 7mm-08 A.I. is wasting your time. The 6.5x284 will whoop a 7mm-08 in the wind, dont believe me? How many 1k f-class open shooters are shooting the 7mm-08? lightbulb lightbulb With the 160 grain 6.5 matrix VLD with its .720 G1 BC...... no comparison.

I have to agree with this I own both calibers and in actual practice I would put the 6.5x284 ahead ballistically. I would however think the 7mm08 would be the more practical rifle for the OP's family, the 308, even more so.
