New girl, just starting long range

thanks!! you pretty much said everything i was trying to say, regarding out of staters, and communist lawmakers. we see eye to eye
We certainly see a lot of out of staters flowing into my state as well. We call it the silent takeover. As with everything, some are really good people. Then there are those that move here fully intent on saving us from our ignorance and out dated ways. Evidently we are too stupid to make decisions for ourselves. But I think like this. When in Rome, do as the Romans do. I don't go into someone else's area and demand that they come around to my way of thinking. I would expect to get run out on a rail. Don't come buy property and build a house next to me and then start a crusade to have my chicken houses torn down because you don't like the smell. Or you don't like the fact that we shoot doves or whatever and you can hear the gunfire. Me and the chickens were here first. Me and my guns were here first. But you are welcome to some eggs or to come shoot with us if you would like. If you don't like that you are free to leave at any time. I'll even help you pack!
Rant over, Very Touchy subject.

I was stationed at Ft. Lewis in Washington a long time ago. We were able shoot on Weyerhaeuser land back then. They had large strips of property. I don't know if they still allow trespassing today for shooters and hunters. Anyone from Washington have knowledge on that?
In Oregon, and I believe in WA also, Weyerhaeuser does not allow target shooting on their land, and you must pay to hunt on it. Those permits sell out quickly. They patrol it with a private security force, which I would bet has cameras all over the place.

Welcome to the forum. I'm fairly new here myself, but there is a wealth of information here and plenty of friendly members to help you along.

Don't be too hard on yourself starting into long range with the ar10 platform. Large frame autos can be a challenge to shoot proficiently. It takes very disciplined fundamentals to shoot one of them well. I was pretty hard on the accuracy standards for mine for a number of years. I'm on my fourth rifle now. Currently shooting an LMT MWS. It's been my favorite, most consistent shooting large frame so far. I think most of that consistency has come from having a realistic expectation of the rifle and just shooting it more. It's a solid moa shooter on a given day. .75 on a good day. Once I resigned myself to that a lot of my problems went away. Watch mountainsmulletsmerica on youtube. He has some really good content dealing with the ar10 platform and LR in general. He's a KAC fanatic. His 100 yard targets and his LR performance will surprise you.

6.5 v 300winmag. I just can't get on the 6.5creed bandwagon. While it's a great starter cartridge for new shooters, I just can't. That said, I'd be leary of a newish shooter jumping straight on a 300winmag. It may not do you any favors starting into the LR game.

I've long been a fan of a 300winmag. Got my first one when I was 14. Still have trouble shaking the flinch at times lol. My current 300winmag weighs 16lbs unloaded and is shot suppressed 100% of the time. This is my hunting rifle but weight is not an issue for me in Texas. In Texas it's a very short trip from the truck to the stand. If we even get out of the truck. Even shooting 215's at 2900, my 300 feels like it kicks less than my wife's model 7 in 7-08.

The 7mm08, now there's a starter cartridge.

Welcome from Missouri.
I too would be hesitant to recommend a 300 win mag for a new shooter. I have one and I love it but the recoil can be a bit much if you shoot very many rounds. I have a 6.5 creedmoor and its a good shooter, mild recoil, lightweight enough for an old guy to take on a hunt. I also had a .260 that I preferred but my son fell in love with it so it lives with him now lol.
This is a great forum to ask questions and learn, a lot of knowledgeable folks on here. I am like a sponge, just sitting over here soaking it all in ;)
