ballistic meter, which one?

I' m in the market for a ballistic meter. so far I have been looking at the Kestrel options, 2700,5700 My max range for use at this time is 800 yds. Are any of you familiar with these or any better options?

How many of you have good results with the big temperature and elevation swings. I am in Florida and looking for something to help with first round hits out west hunting. Looking at the kestrel 5700. I have not used one or app. I have only shot actuals out to 900 here at home

I have the Kestrel 4500 with Horus ATRAG Ballistics. It works pretty good

Every piece of gear has limitations. The 5700 elite is gucci, but I'd recommend still taking it out and getting familiar with it. The wind reading to a range is good if you're in a open area. If there is terrain redirecting wind, you still need to do your part. I take spin drift off, I can calculate it in my head more accurately than the software. I don't know how to turn of AJ but I think I agree with people who say it over compensates. Everything else is like any other software, chrono'd velocity, verify at distance per lot, BC per mach range, add temp sensitivity if you know it plus velocity temp baselines, shoot to trans, verify/true DSF. You can also move over custom drags, making it a little easier. I don't know about everyone else but I have to pretty much recalibrate the compass every time I drive with it. If you you leave Coriolis on, and you travel far, don't forget to update latitude. It's a good stand alone piece of kit outside of analog.

I used to do some long range shooting in Utah against people that used a Kestrel wind meter or other tools and I can say that they were very good at first round hits out to 1500 yards or so but there were other guys doing just as well without any tools. I was OK at estimating the wind but not as good as others, it takes practice.

That being said, I've lived in Arizona, Utah, and now in Montana and depending on the kind of shooting your plan on doing, you may or may not get any shots past 4 or 500 yards out west, especially if you are in mountain country. I've very seldom needed to make a shot past 300 yards and more often it's been more like under 200 yards.

I'm starting with a BT Meter BT-100-WM. It gives air pressure, temperature and wind speed.

The plan is to have printed-on-paper drop charts for different conditions, with actual dial correction at different ranges for the load. I want to use this for a while and get familiar with all the variables, before I decide if I want something more complicated.

The all-in-one wonder gizmos are fantastic, my son uses the high end Kestrel linked to his phone that tells you what to dial.
