Try to look at the "system" in it's entirety rather than a random singular fact.
I would have to research what rules apply to the former ATF Director of DEI, now some other "job" by "redefinition". I am sure there are rules that govern the order of actions needed to complete her termination gracefully. Paid leave followed by elimination of the position is the usual method to avoid litigation for "wrongful termination". In the business world, I learned a enough about soft stepping the getting rid of employees who were more harm than help to be educated in such lings. An "authority", no but educated.
Of course there is the idea that the entire BATFE should be put on "paid leave" then all positions eliminated and the employees terminated because their positions no longer exist.
BTW: a very very quick search turned up that the two unions, AFGE (American Federation of Government Employees) and the NFFE (National Federation of Federal Employees) have nearly 1,000,000 members. That is one million people who get their living from our taxes. Wow.

The only issues the feds should be handling regarding ATF is inter-state commerce & law enforcement. We already have the Department of Commerce and FBI to deal with these issues so I say hasta la vista.

We really need to look at this realistically, you can't close down a revenue dept as tax laws are still there to be collected. We can try to unregulate unconstitutional firearms laws and taxes and then remove the personal associate with it. They will just start saying they are now needed to enforce alcohol and tobacco products so no reduction in workforce can be done. Now they can attack/enforce their will on those products. There are laws about selling onesie (Floyd was doing that) as well as them people crossing state lines with cheaper carton/pack tax stamps.
Yeah, we will never get out of debt as a country when the country is the biggest employer in this country(not world).

Jimmy Carter made it legal to make your own booze and beer, tax free and the limits have been bumped up. Hence, small boutique distilleries, wine and beer abound.
Tobacco has been falling in signicance for decades.
Firearms sales have a bazillion laws so it can be handled by state and federal jurisdictions outside of ATF.
Explosives can be handled by one smaller agency working with FBI if necessary for investigation.
A tax stamp isn't approved by congress as a tax.
The ATF is ripe for DOGE to clean up this aging, out of touch agency.

Agreed not a simple process because the tentacles run deep and has to be done systematically. Gov will tell you it can't be done. However, we have seen the changing of the guard and big changes may be now or never.
