Ready for elk
Nope. No such thing as overkillYou can't have too much gun, ever!
No. It's obvious that the 338 LM smokes the 7mm mag with any load but at least make it a little more fair. Put the 7mm/195s up against the 338/300s. Still won't be a competition but won't be so humiliating to the 7mag7mm Rem Mag 175 gr Fusion @ 1000 yards, 1349 fps 707 ft-lbs
338 Lapua Mag 300 Scenar @ 1000 yards, 1797 fps 2151 ft-lbs
Need I say more?
Wow on the performance of the 270gr BD bullet on the 2nd moose! Very impressive, and good to know.
Thanks much for providing those details.
I've likewise been pleased with the terminal performance of the 196.5gr .308 and 145gr .284 Bulldozer bullets.
My 10-twist .338 barrel causes me to shoot the .275gr Bulldozer, which performed well on a brown bear in 2019. Thinking I may have to get an 8 or 8.5 twist barrel so I can stabilize that .270gr Super Bulldozer.
Agree the 7mm Rem Mag lacks authority on large bull moose. Particularly on quartering shots, let alone Texas heart shots.
That may be the only 270 SBD ever recovered from a game animal. Thanks for posting that photo.here's the recovered Badlands 270 gr Super Bulldozer, punched completely through that mature bull moose lengthwise from stern to bow
That trip was kind of cool, first (two) moose for the Badlands 270 gr Super Bulldozer, brand new Lapua 300 Norma Mag brass (thanks to Ryan Pierce) and the then new IMR 8133 purple can powder

Nice Bull , this is on my bucket list of animals to shoot , Ive packed lots of moose when I was young but never got to pull the trigger .here's the recovered Badlands 270 gr Super Bulldozer, punched completely through that mature bull moose lengthwise from stern to bow

Sometimes it just works better if the bullet hole is bigger it lets out more blood faster , Ive never had any animal walk more than 30 yards from a 400 grain 45/70 and its deadly out 300 yards , I,m building a 338x375 Ruger ( 33 Newton ) for longer shooting needs and the 33s just workOut to 1K a 7 or 30 cal magnum is all one needs for 95% of deer and elk hunting. A 338 is going to do, and give you absolutely nothing over them inside that. Past 1K is where the 338s/300g bullets start to seperate from the 7s and 30s in my opinion anyway. I've had them all, and went back to the 7 mags because I shoot them better, and they kill elk to 1K just fine when you put the bullet in the chest. Maybe one day I'll do another 338 EDGE, but for now I love my 7-300 win mag and 180s at 3000fps out to 1200 yards.
Over the years I've taken many Elk with the "lowly" 270 win. Out to some 500 yds. All went down within just a Few ft! Lost one, then went to the 300 WM. Dropped Elk out to some 800+/- yds. One shot, one kill. So far have never lost one with the 300, and only the one with the 270win. Shot placement. SHOTPLACEMENT! Shoot on Brothers!Yes I agree. The point is why do people think they need a 300 WM, 338, or a 375 to kill elk or moose at say 400 yards or less when a 7 Mag can do it at 1400 yards. I thank thats what Gunwerks was proving. A 243 win with a 105 grain Berger bullet at 400 yards has more energy than that 7 Mag does at 1400 yards. So even a 243 is a great caliber for elk in most cases. Oh no LoL!!!
