AR10 Pack Recommendations

Anyone hunting with an AR10 and carry it in a backpack?

I wouldn't imagine it would be that popular. They are heavy, and there's usually no need for a semi auto.

Now I'm aware, it's America, and you can do what ya want, but I think that's how a lot of people see it, especially people like me who do a lot of backpacking in.

That said, when backpacking, you're prioritizing backpacking, so rifles regardless of type or weight would be strapped and carried the same way you normally would.

Otherwise, most guys use drag bags for ARs, then sling it for the rest of whatever they plan to do, but like I said most guys don't do real backpacking with a AR10, except for the random person on the internet that's going to quote me to let me know "they do."

i don't carry as i don't do that type of hunting, but ar's are my territory when it come to eradicating pigs. most wouldn't do or use ar's for pack hunting (some may though). any intended target or distance for this inquiry?

If you pack an AR10, what do you use (Hunting purposes).

I like Eberlestock, but open to other suggestions.

Thanks
LR-308s are heavy, even in a short barrel. I think it depends on what you intend to use it for, and/or what caliber you want it chambered in.

This is topped with an Arken EP-8 and you can see it weighs 9 lbs. 9.8 oz, so it's pretty much 10 lbs easy with ammo, this is empty.

This doesn't fold, and if you want to carry it inside a pack, a folding stock would help on size. The laws could be changing soon, so until we can tell how the courts will rule this term, I'm in a wait/see mode and have everything disassembled. I am getting a new bolt action soon and plan to focus on it, hoping that it is lighter than this rifle. This is chambered in 8.6 blackout.

I separate my ARs by weight, and I do have both 308 and 6.5 Creedmoor uppers I can use as backup if needed. But for a 308/6.5cm with a 24" barrel, is going to need the same gun sling to carry on the back of a pack. It's not very different with a 16" 6.5cm than it is a 12" 8.6bo, as shown above. It's probably gonna be 11 lbs. If I was picking between an 11 lb AR and an 11 lb AICS chassis with a bolt action, it will end up 11-12 lbs, but I would pick it over the AR.

My alternative is 6.5 Grendel with a 12" barrel, weighing in at 7 lbs. 7 oz. (3.5kg) Ignore the goofy CA legal cheek weld, IYKYK.

Finally, my lightest AR, it's a 300 blackout with a 7.5" barrel, with a cheap red dot. 6 lbs. 5 oz.

All that said, I don't recommend hunting with an AR, as most are heavy. It really depends what you're looking for and how far you intend to hunt. But I tend to think of using an AR for short range hunting. My $0.02. I have various ARs, but with Gavin Newsom's war on the residents 2A rights, I'm in wait/see mode.

As for how to carry, I normally like to use a sling and let it hang down in front while I pack. Otherwise I use an external frame pack and use the gun sling with it wrapped inside the pack to secure it.

AR's don't have to be heavy, but per barrel length compared ba's they are in most cases. I have a 20" 308win that weights w/optic 5# 12.?ozs. With a better barrel ut could add up to 7-7.5#. Still at 7-8# it isn't bad. Titanium, carbon fiber and magnesium parts add up cost quickly, but you get what you want! So far accuracy with a pencil barrel isn't bad w/m80 ammo. Hopefully with quality reloads it'll get to .5-.75moa. Probably won't have time to test until this summer after my daughter graduates? Then it'll be 4 down and 2 to go (sophomores for 25-26 year).
