You can build lightweight ar10/lr308 rifles for hunting if you like--- mine is under 7 pounds with 3-9 scope on it
For purely target I would use at least a 20" barrel and weight would help keep it a stable platform, short barrels have quite a bit of muzzle jump without a brake.
