Field Report!!

I just test drove the new AB Mobile app. Last night I plugged in some of my field data into it from previous shots taken.

Just went out in the yard and picked a 1 moa rock at 905 yards.

Here is the scoop

Distance 905 yds
Temp 80*
Hum 20%
shoot angle 6*
6 MPH wind at 9:00
Spin drift enabled

AB gave me a shooting solution of

U 19.1
L 2.6

I dialed 19 up and 2 1/2 left and put 4 on the rock just a tad right of center. My wind call was light by 1 mph or they would have been spot on. But still plenty good, as all 4 went into under 3/4 moa just .25 moa right.

I know this is not that long of a shot, but it for sure was 4 one and done kills.

Rifle was my 338 LM with 300 Bergers

I will stretch her out farther soon and let ya know how it goes.

Looks awesome, just got home and got it down loaded and ran some numbers through it, they match up as they should with Shooter so far.

Did notice a couple things though, if I go to home and come back in to AB it starts me of on the rifle page and I have to go from there as apposed to bring in me back to the solution screen like Shooter, major pain in the butt if I go out to us a GPS or notebook app and I come back into AB.
The reticle tool is outstanding, can we get more than +50 though cause some are tying on everything the optic has then holding over also I can't enter more than a single digit so I have to hold + till I get where I want, just a little slow. Super sweet tool, looking forward to more reticles!!
I also noticed the Coriolis on the HUD shows A63/L0 but in the reticle tab it is A63/L45.21.

I punched in the data we've been using in Shooter for a 338 RUM and a 300gr OTM and at my elevation it's showing me that I'd need to shoot to 3600 yards to make it to step two in the Ballistic cal, is that telling me I should be able to get my trajectory on with the Library G7 BC assuming everything else is nuts on, using only the velocity to at least the step one range of 1980 yards ?

Out of interest, did you use the supplied Litz data or did you use your own derived B.C. data?

I used the data my rifle had exibited in previous shooting with these bullets at the altitude where I live.

That's what I hope you would say. So you would say there is consistency between results "Shooter" gives and what "AP" gives.

I hope to get a chance to get out this weekend and send some rounds out wide and see how this "AP" program works. Looking forward to it......... :D

Yes the numbers from both programs are running close as far as what I have compared. But I do see some slight differences. I would assume those slight differences will make more difference when you get way out there and that is what I want to see as soon as I get time. It Will be interesting to compare them both after the shot to see which would have been closer. The programs are a lot alike, with some option differences. I really like shooter so I am hoping the AB probram will be like a new and improved shooter.

Bryan, does AB take atmosphere change into account when shooting at an angle from say 6000ft to 9000ft?
I was playing with Shooter and AB and really never noticed that it's giving an elevation change based on wind direction and drag, that seems sweet, taking the wind data from the last time we shot ELR the wind drag had a spread of 1.3 MOA elevation. That's huge at 1900+yards, wonder how many guys are tweaking their program one day only to see them of another and blaming the wrong element!
 
Not sure if I am understanding this new program. I have not purchased it yet but will soon.

Can someone tell me if these custom drag models eliminates the need for stepped BC's? If I understand it right, a person would still have to establish his own drops at various distances (more the better) to make a custom drag model. Is this correct?
 
Well, if AB is Shooter on steroids then it will be a sweet app! Shooter is by far my favorite app as far as accuracy, ease of use, and options! I am looking forward to the reticle tool! Sounds awesome for how I hunt!

I love the website option as well. It would be so much easier and faster to be able to do comparisons and after-shoot evaluations on a full screen home PC. I would also suggest having a nice print screen with lots of options for various chart printouts. This is a feature that many good apps are lacking!

And then get on the iOS system. Apple is all I have right now! :)

Yes, AB Mobile takes air density change into account on angled shots. ie; when your bullet is going 'uphill', the air density reduces, and it increases on a look-down shot. Not a big difference, but it's known so it's modeled.
Likewise the head and tail wind components are modeled along the trajectory. Again, not a big difference, but all the little things add up.

You're understanding correctly. Custom drag curves are made for specific bullets, not referenced to a standard curve. You can think of it like a stepped BC with like 100 steps to make it match perfectly. This feature is really only a benefit if you're shooting at ranges where your bullet slows below ~1300 fps (transonic range). That's where a bullets' drag curve diverges most from the standards and the benefit of a custom curve is greatest. If you're only shooting in the supersonic range of your trajectory, you probably won't benefit from a custom drag curve.

Thanks Bryan, can we see some custom drag curves for the Matrix .277 165 gr and 175gr if at all possible!!!! Vortex and Sightron MOA reticles would mine complete!

When selecting the Berger 300gn Hybrid OTM from the library it didn't populate the bullet length box.
 
I downloaded this app a few days ago and have been playing with it. First of all let me congratulate Bryan and the developers, it is a great app. Very similar to "shooter", I really like the feature showing the solution in the reticle, very useful.

Just a couple of suggestions though. As Topshot mentioned, when selecting a bullet it does not populate the "length". Drove me crazy for a while because I could not figure out why it said in the solution that spin drift was off when I had turned it on in the preferences. I finally figured that the bullet length was not in the data, entered it and now I have spin drift data.

The second item is one also present in the "shooter" app. In the HUD the + / - push buttons to change range / wind is very tedious. Why not do it like "BulletFlight" and some other apps that let you scroll to the desired range or wind?

Other than those two minor items it is a great app, thanks for making it available!
