The A-Bolt II Long range hunter with composite stock, adjustable trigger, SS, and 26" heavy barrel is what I'd look for, if you need to customize further (doubtful) it seems the best platform to do it from. They have some nice calibers, but the 300 win mag would be my choice. Fit and finish and magazine system are second to none. Interestingly, if the 195 grain 7mm gets out, order a barrel in the perfect twist for it in 7 mm and have it chambered as a 7 stw. I'm thinking about doing that. Just waiting for that bullet and knowledge about the best barrel twist rate at this point. I think they are still making them, but check Gunbroker and such. They are a very strong short bolt throw action, reliable, and the attention to detail in a Browning and the quality for a factory rifle at the $1000 price level is incredible. People that have owned Brownings, mostly hunters know this. The long range sniping crowd is a little different. Most hunters are really 3 digit hunters, ( I am ) The concept of long range hunting isn't long range sniping. I think this is misunderstood here? If you read what Len's passion about LRH was and I believe is, it's not long range 1000 yard + sniping an animal. It's a complete experience in glassing animals that are hard to get close to and then getting in a position to harvest them ethically. Normally this is 300-700 or so yards in my estimation. A Browning isn't going to be a 1200 - 1 mile gun. But that isn't really long range hunting anyway. Brownings can be the right gun and a quality purchase for the hunter.

My 2 cents.

welp might as well throw a couple teaser pics up of my a bolt 7lrm. I cant WAIT to throw some down range with it. should be back to me in 2 weeks. carbon barrel, a5 stock, nightforce, all the little odds and ends done. i am stoked.

Believe it or not, this group is my most recent at 300 yds out of a 24 yr old Abolt 338 win mag. I have started to again reload for this rifle in the last 12-15 months after a LONG break and settling for factory loads. Spending time on this forum got me into hand loading again. I topped it with a Swarovski 3-18x44, brake, limbsaver recoil pad & trigger spring kit, but have had mixed results working up loads. After reading a few recent threads, decided to quit cleaning the **** thing after each trip to the range and sure enough, it tightened up. I doubt i could ever repeat this group but i have had great results with jammed 225 grain accubonds & H4350. I love this rifle, it has filled my garage with elk racks over the years, most under 75yds. Getting this thing to shoot better than so-so is addicting and will definitely get a new barrel once this one shoots out.

Did they true the action? I have a Stainless Stalker 270 win LH...it is my range and hunting gun so it gets a lot of use, at least by my standards. I am getting a custom '06 done and it should be here soon...it will weigh 10lbs or so with scope.

When the 270 needs to be rebarreled, or when I want something else even if the barrel is still good, I plan to do a lightweight 280AI, and would like to find someone that can build it and true the action.

Have we found anyone the trues A-bolt actions?

Yes it's been trued and blued by Gunwerks

It would be nice to find a smith or 2 that regularly works n A-Bolts. I do like Brownings and there are more aftermarket parts today than even 4 years ago. Makes them very attractive to have.

All of my hunting rifles are A bolts. 7-08 AI, 7mm and .300wm. They all shoot great and like the MAX loads. I think the 7mm barrel is on its last leg. It's accuracy has dropped off somewhat recently. But that's going from 1/2 groups to 3/4" groups with a sirocco 150 g @ 3280. It's a screamer, my first rifle I ever bought in ~1994. It has since been moved to the backup position as the 300wm with 180 pills in stainless took it's place. I believe if the barrel does go, I'll be replacing it with something similar in the same caliber, shooting the same bullet.

I have a custom Browning that is still a work in progress. I started with a A-bolt 7MM RM and rebarreled it in 270 WSM. The long action and magazine allows me to load the longer bullets to .02 off the lans. 150 grain nossler ABLR and Berger 170 EOL. The stock is a McMillon A-5 and the barrel is a 26" Benchmark Barrel with a Muscle break. Scope is a Nightforce ATACR 4X16. It shoots bug holes at a hundred yrds and is effective out to 1000 Yards. The buck pictured was shot from 598 yards. I'm still looking for some bottom metal and a replacement magazine.
