Ammo Storage for Hunting

I should add on to my original post. Gun will not have a magazine so will be able to carry a few rounds internally. An no sleeves or add ons to the rifle. Strictly looking for backpack storage of 5-10 rounds. Compact and lightweight is most important. Got some good replies so far so thanks guys!

Back in the day my dad had me carry 5, 308, in a sock in my back pocket. I got became so used to it I still do the same, even 338 LM. Not that I am cheap, just the pattern became so ingrained. Been reading what everybody is doing, maybe I should step up in the present day.

I dont backpack hunt, and I always carry way to much ammo. 4 in the gun, about 8 in the stock cheek rest holder, 1 in each pant pocket, 10 more in the daypack.

To much is better than to little. My buddy and I went out for a quick peak one afternoon. He left his pack in the truck. He saw an elk and ranged it at 250. He took 3 shots and missed 3 shots. He left his spare ammo in his pack, in the truck...

He re-ranged and it was actually about 415. He hit a tree at 250 on the first range attempt and launched his only 3 rounds. Once he re-ranged because he could not figure out why he missed he realized his mistake...

We never got another shot at those 2 elk again.

Old carpenter rule measure twice cut once.

Range several times, if he had time for three shots he had time for two - three ranging shots since the range finder is a little quieter than three rifle shoots.

I'm not saying , but just saying....

Don't backpack any longer, but still somewhat weight conscious as I'm getting too old to hump excess weight! However, few years back, went on a guided hunt in the Selway. Outfitter REQUIRED every hunter to have 40 rounds. Seems a hunter in the previous cycle to ours had wandered off from the guide, got lost for 4 days, and finally found (alive thank goodness) down in the black/nasty under an uprooted tree trunk. He had shot all his rounds trying to signal and ran out. He dad a good story about a curious black bear encounter after running out of ammo (they were THICK that year in the Selway). Any, upshot is that I still carry a carry 1 round in my coat pocket, three taped together in my pants pocket, 20 rounds in a plastic case w/ foam at the top, and 3 in the mag. I hope I never have to use that much ammo for a day's hunt but can't let go of the thought of "I wish I'd brought more this time" that hunter must have had. I know I'm not providing any new info on methods of carry, but thought you might like a story illustrating a reason one MIGHT carry extra.

Curious what everyone uses for a compact and secure means for storing and transporting your ammo while hunting. I backpack hunt the high country where I live and only looking to carry 5-10 rounds of ammo. Last year I used a nice leather fold over style pouch that held 5 300wm rounds. This year I will be hunting with a 300 norma mag improved and am looking for ideas along the same lines to hold a cartridge body of that size. Ideally to work with 338 Lapua as well. I'm sure a cartridge this size really narrows available options but open to everyone's options and ideas!

This might be an option on the hardcase side. Product video showed a truck rolling over the case with no damage to ammo, has the sponge in the lid to hold bullets secure.

I have a spare mag in my pack two mags are 10 rounds even for my 338 I have not been on the hunt where I needed more than 10 rounds

AEM precision makes a cloth 10 round soft carrier that I use when hunting with a bigger gun. It holds 10 rounds of CIP length 300 Winmag fine and I'm pretty sure it would hold your Norma or Lapua cases as well. My rifles nearly all have DBMs and I usually just carry an extra AICS mag or the soft carrier.

Any of the fold over ammo pitches work well. I use the kuiu but many already listed here that work very similar.
