Am I on the right path? 7mm build.

two 7 mags run R#26, 175g LRAB, Rem brass, cci 250 at 3030 and 3050, tiny groups, nothing special. Groups at 600 are 2-3" depending on the wind, 6-24 scopes. R#22 is 2850 in a pencil eraser size group, bullets sorted and seated .003 off the lands, full-length sized brass ONLY.

I know the 28 Nosler may be a "barrel" burner - but (1) If it is not going to be expected to handle long strings, can give it cool down and (2) you can keep from really stepping on it. It deliver the speeds you want and higher very easily.
The photo shows just under 19 MOA dial up from 100 yd. zero at 1000yds with a 180 hybrid at 1800ft elevation. And this is far from a warm load.

I agree with HuntnPack, build a Saum. I have two. One is my longer range hunting rifle and the other was built for shooting steel. I have shot both out to 1200 yds on steel. The bench gun has gone out to a mile. The saum is my favorite 7mm. I have 3 7-08's, one 280 and 2 7rm's. The Saum wins for me.

I agree on the poundage for sure. I just now read the Varmint Contour. wow that will be heavy. I'd go #4 then if it's still heavy get him to flute it for ya.
I did order a fluted barrel. My 700 sendero scoped is 11.2 lbs with the HS stock and a 26 inch barrel. I think with a lighter stock and a 24 inch barrel I should be around 10.5lbs.

2900-2950 with 180 grain bullets and out of a short action is going to be overpressure. My guess is that even running it long out of a medium action it's still going to be slightly overpressure. If I had to hit those numbers I'd build a 7mm PRC on a long action and hope that Lapua or ADG decides to start making brass for it.
I'm most likely going with a long action.

If that is the case I would go with either the 7 PRC or a long throated 7mm RM. The potential for 7 SAUM magazine feeding issues in a long action would be one more fact weighing against the cartridge.

Considering the fact that you're going with a long action and the speeds you that you're looking to get there is zero chance I'd go with the 7 SAUM.

You need to be looking 7 Rem or PRC

7rem mag comes to mind

H1000 is one heck of a powder in the 28 Nosler with 160-168g bullets, and the heat index of this powder leads to much longer throat life. The Node with H1000 is about 80 fps less than Retumbo, but both of these powders are wicked accurate.

Not interested in the PRC. I have a 6.5PRC and had to send it back to smith because of the clicker issues. Have heard a few 7PRCs have had the same issues already.

You don't think 2950 is attainable with 168s or that 2900 can be had with 175-180s? I don't really care if I can't hit 2900 with 180s I definitely think 2850-2875 is very realistic. I will take the SAUM's inherit accuracy over 50-75fps.
