Almost a limit

I carry a Browning Buck Mark along with my rifle when hunting squirrels. My pistol is for close shots.

Perhaps the best shot I ever made on a squirrel was with a Browning….though, it was a Nomad!

There was a group of us, several uncles and myself (just a 15 yo kid) hunting in Evangeline Parish, La. We had a little "cur" dog, and were hunting just about anything that moved……mostly squirrels though.

I was the only one "NOT" carrying a shotgun……most were "humped-back" Browning 12's. I was carrying my Win. Model 88 in .308 Win. …..and my little Browning.

The dog "treed" a squirrel in a tall, straight, heavily vine covered Ash (I think). We started surrounding the tree, once positioned, someone would jerk on a vine ……hoping to move the squirrel.

I had my little Browning in hand, while others were positioning themselves, when the squirrel panicked.

I was standing right beside one of my uncles……but, got a shot off before any of the shotgunners!

The squirrel immediately fell from the tree…..heck, it didn't even get hung-up in the vines!😁

I'm not sure who was more surprised…… me, my uncles, or the squirrel! 😜 The 22 LR bullet hit it squarely through the chest, entering behind the shoulder!

58 years later, it seems almost like yesterday! I often think about and wish that I could relive those hunts that I made with my uncles! memtb

Today I scoped, cleaned, and added the sling to my new Savage A17 Sporter .17 WSM. Tomorrow is for sighting in and testing the 20gr and 25gr ammo. Scope is a fine old BSA 40mm 6X-24X and should work fine.

I thought I had only a part of a box of 25 gr but I have over 4 boxes of 25 gr. I have over 2 bricks of 20 gr and hope the rifle likes both.

My Savage BMAG .17 WSM is now retired and joins the rest of the saft queens.
