Advice wanted on rifle calibers

Sure sounds to me like you might like a stock 6 mm remington. Almost a 100 ft per second faster then a .243 with a longer neck and they seem to have better barrel life. One can buy stock ammo that will run a 100 grain bullet to 3100 ft/second and still have almost 1000 (904) ft-lbs of energy at 500 yards. And you can hand load it to a bit stronger...

Kind of fits right below the stock 7 mm remington and 6.5x.284. Of course you could fit a stock .25-06 in between the 6.5x.284 and the 6 mm Remington. So maybe you need two more rifles.

I have both a .25-06 and a a 6 mm Remington and think I like using the 6 mm Remington more for your purposes.

I would add my vote to the 6-284 list.

A 6-284 is just so darn easy I'm not sure how it can even be called a wildcat anymore. My pops has a beautiful full custom 6-06ai that shoots the 105's very well but there is no way I would go thru that much work for such a little gain over the 6-284.

a look thru loading manuals will tell you that the 6/284 just another over bore cartridge. You shorten the case 5/32", and you still only loose about 100fps. That ought to be the first hint that something's amiss. P.S. did a test a few years back, and compared the .243, .243AI, 6mm, 6mmAI, and the 6/284. The 6mm AI was about 100fps faster with more than double the barrel life. But the plain jane .243 Winchester was roughly 225fps slower than the fastest! If you gotta have a barn burner in 6mm, the 6mm Vias is it. It'll push a 70 grain bullet faster than a 220 Swift can push a 50 grain bullet (over 4100 fps).

Ackley got it right forty years ago when he said the standard 6mm Remington was about all the powder you could burn efficiently in a 24 caliber bore. The 6mmAI is somewhat over bore till start to get into 90 grain and heavier bullets. I shoot the 6mm/250AI (nothing but a 22-250AI necked up to 6mm), and it will do a little over 3000fps with the 105 grain Amax. Yet only uses about 44 grains of 4831sc powder. But the 6mmBG does the same velocity with a 107 grain Sierra with even less powder! But the real insult is the 6BR! It will effortlessly push a 105 grain bullet to 2800fps using much less powder yet (as will the Dasher)

I agree that there are more efficient cases than the 6-284, but it's not always about efficiency. That said, RL33 greatly increases the efficiency of the 6-284 with heavier bullets. There are members here getting 3500 fps give or take with RL33 and 105's

If the OP's priority was efficiency, then I would recommend the 6mmBR

3500fps!!! and some folks can walk on water! Speeds I quoted came off two different chrongraphs ( Ohler and a Pact) and were virtually identical between the two of them. They must be doing 70K psi.
