Why would anyone choose 150 in their 308 and/or 30-06? Why not a 175 SMK or a 180 AccuBond much better BC and lot better long range performer.

I am well aware of the velocity differences between a 308/30-06 and the various 30 cal mags. I not only own and shoot a 30-06 but I also own and shoot 300 win, 300 RUM and even a 338 Lapua.

If you were to make up a custom long range rifle based on the .30-06 how about this.

28" heavy barrel with a quality brake, bedded into a sturdy custom carbon fiber stock. Shoot 210 gn Bergers out of a 1 : 10 twist barrel at about 2600 fps with Lapua brass. Slap on a quality scope and mounts, for an all up weight of about 12.5lbs.

Should hit hard out to long range and have virtually no recoil. Make a fun and cheap gun to shoot. Also the barrel would last a very long time.

Not sure you would get as good long range performance if you tried to do the same thing with a .270?

I have a 26 3/4" Krieger barreled 30-06 and that 210 Berger should get 2700 or very close maybe even more. I get almost 2900 with 180 AccuBonds in mine with 57.5 Grains of H-4350

Sorry JWP, I didnt mean to offend you. I actualy thought 300hart wrote this and I was replying to him. The 150gr was just a quick and easy comparison.
My point was simply this. would you trade your 300win or 300rum or 338LM, as your dedicated long range rifles for a 30-06? I own an -06 and love it, but Id much rather have my 300wby for my long range pokes.
Again no offence intended. I do like the 30-06 but its definately not my first choice for long range with as many other choices out there that simply out perform it for long range with energy to spare.

No offense taken, just perhaps a difference of opinion or a different way of looking at the subject. To me it is not a mtter of trading one for the other they are different tools IMHO. I would never build a 30-06 to be as heavy as I would my larger caliber guns, which makes the 06 a more versitile tool IMHO, but none of the 308's/30-06's, or 300's are in the same class as a 338 with a 300 grain SMK at 2800 or so FPS as a long range hammer. The bigger dedicated long range rifles are highon the food chain in my experience and opinion. The 308/30-06 virtuious are often over looked is all that I was trying to point out. A rifle is a personal choice and I have no problem wit anyones coice, but facts or facts
