ABLR’s won’t shoot

The 190 ABLR has given me fits. I have worked them down to sub 1/2 moa in test loads only to have them open up inconsistently after a while. The best groups were around .140 off the lands. When I found a .010 window it was dramaticaly better. They went from 2 inches to .5 inch. I haven't given up on them, but did set them aside this season.

I pressed the easy button due to lack of time. The easy button was the 200 gr Berger hybrid. They are very forgiving on seating depth. I could find a load and spend time practicing and not worry that it would fall apart as the throat changed.

I gave 142 and 150 gr. ABLR a fair shake with few powders that worked well in a 6.5 PRC. Nothing exciting. Same powders with Hammers and Bergers were great I didn't want to spend the time and components to get the 210 30 cal ABLR to shoot well in 300 RM and 300 WM. 215 Berger in RUM and 180 HH were outstanding. I've had good luck with regular Accubonds in 4 calibers.
Go to bed Dan 😉

Regular Accubonds are as simple as ballistic tips. And they are completely idiot proof.

I noticed Nosler loads these in there load data to as long as possible with full neck contact in 6.5 Creedmoor. This is like 0.168" off the lands. I wonder if this is why people are getting varied results. That is a lot of jump to me. I'm trying max OAL 2.825" first, before I try 2.775". I may change my mind tomorrow.

I'd sure like to hit those numbers. Did you try retumbo with the 160's? Better chance of finding Sasquatch than RL-26 around here at least.
I did not try Retunbo. I have plenty of Rl-26 however Retunbo is the sauce in the 270 WSM. The pic below is.373 for 5 shots. I miss spoke earlier I was not at home. I think I said it was.343.

Wow.....

For one of the easiest bullets to get to shoot accurately that I've played with, I'm surprised at this thread.

Shooting the 7mm, both the 150gr & 175gr ABLR in a number of different cartridges and rifle manufacturers.

150gr in my Stevens 200 in 7mm-08AI, Ruger 77 MKII in 280 Rem, Whitworth Mark X with E.R. Shaw barrel in 284 Win, Savage 111 in 7mm Rem Mag and Weatherby Mark V Weathermark LT in 7mm Weatherby.

175 in the 7mm Rem Mag and 7mm Weatherby Magnum.

Distance off the lands is in the 0.02-0.03" in all but the Weatherby.

The jump in the Mark V is 0.270".

I quit using them for my woods hunting after shots of 50 yards and less they don't seem to open up as I'd expect.
The same weight Nosler Ballistic Tip does more internal damage at close range.

I may try them again on deer at further distances.

I was thinking the same thing.

How far is 'a lot' of jump that you've experienced with them?
Not sure what he means but Mine do great at a tenth of an inch. 168 7mm. almost the edge of pressure and jumping .1". That may have been luck, they were all over the road working up pressure then they snapped together right as I was starting to get the lightest compression. They've stayed reliable there though. Whereas the ELDM has wide nodes at and below pressure, and hammers were tight from start of ladder testing.

Also this is with h4831sc. If you can't get accurate with that, sell the bullets.

well, i hope they shoot and group well as i have several in many different calibers from the .264, 277, .284, 308 & .338. all have the same lot # per caliber and weight, so if that's an issue at least it's within the same lot #. i bought in groups of 500 and 1k. i got the 190's for 308win (maybe used in the shorter wm) and the 210's for the wm. weights seem to be close, but lengths vary (haven't checked ogive). i only have 1 .277 that big enough to shoot the 150's (270win), but wouldn't mind having the 270wsm or the 6.8western. the 142's were for the wm, but might give a go in the 260rem (not the 6.5creed). having 2 .284's (7-08rem & 7saum) i'll save the 150's for the 7-08 and 175's for the saum. going up to the .308 i've already stated my intentions. i only have 1 .338 and that's the lm. not sure what to expect with a 24" barrel (savage 110 stealth)? thought about the 129's, but i'll hold off for now.

Are they? $73 for 100 bullets is cheap for a bonded bullet.
The regular price for the .30 cal 190 is ~$95/box.

I too have had inconsistent grouping results with the ABLRs. When I read on this thread folks are weight and ogive sorting to get them to group consistently, that frustrates me for the price/box on these "premium" bullets. I'm not into sorting hunting bullets…especially at that price…

I will say I shot and killed a cow elk at 418 yards with the 190 ABLR. Worked well. After the hunt I went to the range to check zero and they were shooting all over the place.

At that price, I'd rather shoot Hammers.
