A-Tips, terminal performance on big game

Yes sir, it's got an aluminum tip...with a lead core. Some are thinking it's got a harder lead alloy for the core than is used in the ELD-M...
I don't think it's a harder lead, it's same as eld-m but with a diff tip see post 34 that's the entrance wound on the front left shoulder.

Maybe less cavity behind the tip? Sure did a number on your deer. Good shooting. 👍What MV are you launching the 135 out of your saum?

I feel like I have a fast bartlein barrel, I can launch 130 Berger hybrids at 3200, 135atips at 3100 and a 155 mega at 2800. 24 inches with an ultra 7 on the end
Nice. That gets you out there pretty good ballistic-wise... I'm thinking on a Sherman SST or Sherman Max in a 6.5. Replacing a 270 WSM... I think the SST will run pretty close to the SAUM, so your info helps me out. Have you thought about trying the 153 gr A-tips?

I have, running a couple different calculators it's a wash inside 600yards, the 153 shines past that for windage and drop compared to the 135. I have 1000 135's that I got on sale but I do have some 153's on order. I'll see how the 60 rounds of 153's shoot first that I ordered from copper creek.

Oddly, I was just reading another thread about 147 ELDMs blowing up. lol

Here is a video.

I shot a match this weekend with the 153gn A-Tips, and 5 of 50 bullets disappeared on the way to the target on a day that I was otherwise shooting really well. I had heard of this issue with Hornady bullets previously, but discounted it. Now I'm convinced.

I've heard of this in say the 180 ELD-M's pushing high velocity out of fast twist 28 Nosler's. What speed and twist were you at with your 153's?

The Berger .308 215 gr. hybrid target is one of the most effective hunting bullets made.

Says who? I am interested in shooting this bullet but I had a couple negative experiences with Berger 7MM bullets on game. I am reluctant to invest a bunch of energy and barrel life into this projectile. I've read a lot of threads on it and it doesn't seem that the matter is settled.

Man I cant believe these conversations just keep going, doesn't matter what forum or country!

Put any projectile put in the right place & as Doug Marcaida says- "it will kill"

Will it work as effectively as a hunting projectile, not imo.

The fact that it has "Match" in the tag/box should be enough to let people know what it was intended to be for but no that's not good enough for some people.

Sometimes people just like to twist information/results for their own satisfaction & justification to use a projectile even though that's NOT WHAT IT WAS DESIGNED FOR.

The chances of run on's or lost game would be way higher!

So I think instead of asking will it work, maybe the question should be what percentage of animals ran on injured & couldn't be found due to poor projectile performance over the number of animals that were DOI??

I don't think you will get an honest account of all the lost game.

Personally the only animal I have lost was a whitetail shot with a 165gr Ballistic tip in a 308 win at about 50 yds,
I aimed at the lungs and I never found the deer, I tracked it for the better part of the day and lost the blood trail.

Of course not!

So just wondering, why in your case above you just didnt go for a head shot??

Its something I have notice here that everyone seems to go for a body shot when they are in range for a headshot & instant kill??

I'll go for a headshot out to 150/200mtrs any day.

Up until I lost that animal I had never lost any game, I have never tried a head shot on any game as a first shot I like to think that the lung shot is the safest shot under many conditions but I have dispatched game with a head shot mostly because I do not want to waste meat by shooting the body more than necessary. I think that if I was hunting dangerous game I would be more inclined to aim for the head whenever possible and practice to do so.

No A Tip experience here but by that video it looks like the ELDM bullet results. I know many people like the M bullets for hunting but it is still a match bullet. If you can stay away from the shoulder or big rib on a broadside shot you will be OK. Seems that they just shatter after hitting initial bone. Penetration then is lacking. Not enough for quartering shots at all.
i personally like match bullets for hunting. I religiously use Sierra Match Kings after having a Berger failure. The Berger .284 168 grain vld would have worked fine which it did at 400 yards on the follow up shot but at 70 yards hitting the shoulder quartering towards me it just curled up in a ball under the hide! My .338 250 grain SMK smashed through that very shoulder joint almost the same angle then penetrated through lungs hitting the backbone destroying 8" of backbone then traveled down back strap and broke leg bone at the pelvis with a softball sized exit hole! That range was just shy of 600 yards. 2 completely different scenarios but it convinced me so I never looked back.
