8mm Thread

@Mudrunner2005 is a good guy and really knows a lot about rifles, ammo and all things related. Buutt, there is one crucial thing missing that would make him almost perfect, and that's a decent 8mm Mag. :D 2015 is coming soon ...

Mudrunner figures Alabama is the whole world, a good European vacation, and he'd realize there are more mm past 7.gun):D

Always nice to hear or read about other people who appreciate the 8mm catridges and guns as I do! :) I would call me kind of 8mm -nerd, because I think there are not many calibres out there which can deliver the same kind of terminal downforce like they do. The Big - 8 deliveres the same amount of energy at 500yards than a 308 does at the muzzle ... :D
As European I prefer to go with the 8x68S and will have a new one in May 2015. It'll be a Heym SR 21 (LH) with a 25,5" (65 cm) barrel, and I'm going to use 220gr. Brenneke TOG at a MV of 875m/s (2870fps) and 200gr. AB with a MV of 950m/s (3116fps). In my book that's more than sufficient. Later on I shall load up and test some hunting bullets from GS - Custom for it. They do look very promising.

I have pre-war sauer made mauser 98 in 8x57 improved . I use 8 rem mag dies for neck sizing my cases and seating. The rem mag dies had to be machined down. As the cases are different lenghts . I use this rifle for elk hunting and have to use copper bullets here in Jerry Brown's California.

8x57 improved sounds very interesting! Is it based on the standard 8mm Mauser cartridge like you call it? 8x57IS? I never heard of such a cartridge. Do you have picture we could look at. Thanks in advance! gun)

been a while since I posted regarding load data for the 8x68S, just about have it sorted:).

Using 180g Nosler BT's, Federal magnum primers and RWS brass.
With 2213sc I ran out of case capacity at 78g and 2900fps!
Went to AR2209 at 72g and 3050fps with case capacity to spare and am calling it good.

I also have some 175g ACP's to try. Aussie Custom Projectiles

Rifle is a Mauser 66SM. I has taken several months for my scope to arrive and then milled a base for the rings, still waiting for more brass which was ordered 4 months ago.

thinking about doing some military sil matches with my 8mm Mauser... bullet recommendations? Old rebuilt 1942 refurbished Turkish M38 (contract built in Germany, gifted in WWI then rebuilt to m38 standard during WWII. Fun stuff)

For the 8mm Mauser or more precisely 8x57IS I'll strongly recommend Hornady's 196gr. BT-HP Match (use it myself) or Nosler's 200gr. CC (HP -BT).

Congrats to your very nice rifle in the superb 8x68S! The Mauser 66 was the first rifle with a new telescopic bolt action in the world and has still many friends and supporters. Great craftmanship! I think you might change powders though (velocity!) and have a closer look to H - 1000, IMR - 7828 SSC, Vihtavouri N160, N560, H4831 SC and RL22. I don't know if you can get any Rottweil and Norma powders, then you would get even more good choices. Bulletweights for 8x68S are ideal from 196 - 220gr. 160 and 180gr are great for monos like BarnesT(T)SX. Good luck! gun)

Thanks. Do you have any loads for the powders listed?

I have been looking for a Mauser 66 in a caliber to reach out, for a couple of years. Would rather of ended up with a 6.5x68, a 7x68 would be perfect and consolidate reloading consumables. may have to build up a 7mm barell in the future.

My original post asked for loads and powders for the 8x68S. I recieved no replies and have been searching, a bloke on the Blasser forums listed a load using H4831sc/2213sc which seemed very low, I used it as a starting point and backed out a primer and sooted the case as it did not have enough pressure. From reading other posts a 180g projectile should be running in the 3100 to 3200fps range, 73g of AR2209 gave negligable velocity increase but flattened the primer more than 72g.

The 175g ACP is a copper projectile. will give it a run when I sort the Noslers.

cheers,
JamesW

Hi James! I'll come back to you today a little bit later on with some load - suggestions/recommendations for the 8x68S, my alltime favourite! :) COAL will be given in mm (!!), be aware of that!

Varberger757, I'm Australian and work in both imperial and metric daily, sometimes on the same job, my Dad was from the imperial era and I fell into the change over to metric! Dose get **** confusing though!

Regarding overall length; I'm seating the projectile as far out as practical as there is no chance of reaching the rifling lands as it seems to be throated for round nosed projectiles, it has a long taper into the rifling, also getting close to magazine length.

Been trying to get out and sight in the rifle but a fairly savage sutherly blew up this afternoon. Have been using an old foggy scope for load development.

Cheers,
James

I order the reamer from Midway Usa and had to wait a while . The 98 had an over size neck area from the factory , before reaming. I have a RCBS forming die where I can make brass on '06 style cases.
