Thanks for the details of your post from '03 db. I looked it up and read Warren's description...exactly what I had thought from the beginning.

Update: I almost doubled the amount of bearing surface inside the neck of the case (from 0.073 to 0.140) and tested the same range of powder charges as I had tried previously.

The result was as expected with the case expanding enough to seal the chamber before the bearing surface exited the case.
