7mm STW Brotherhood - For those who shoot the 7mm Shooting Times Westerner

The deals on 7 stw out there are incredible. If it said 300 Weatherby it would be a thousand more. Yet a simple barrel change will get you there. Go figure? Not a bad switch barrel powerhouse.

Ed, I ran into two Weatherby MK V's today. One was in 257' and the other was in 300. Both were wearing Leupold scopes. Asking price was 1300 each. I picked up both, and they were absolutely mint condition. The wood was simply gorgeous. Almost TOO nice, if you know what I mean. I have been seeing a lot of 300 WBY's recently. Ares you still looking for one? If so, I'll keep my eyes open.

I'm doing a custom No 1 Ruger in 300 Weatherby, sort of a collector, precision one with a custom built trigger and wood. A 2 year project. Else, I'd consider it. Thanks for asking though.

Dang...... I'd push the like button if there was one. I love Ruger No. 1s. My Father has 2 and I hade one in a 7 Rem Mag, but had to sell it to put a down payment on a house.

I'm considering building one myself, Cartridge is undecided as of yet...

Dano, I just picked up a Ruger MK II,M77 VT in 25-06. I know it is not a No.1, but it came highly recommended by someone here, but I can't think of his name.
Awesome rifle, in great shape. It is wearing a 6.5-20 VARI x III. Target trigger is amazing.
Meanwhile how are things with you? Shooting much? I've been doing a little, but the heat and humidity have been brutal here recently. Take care, and hope all is well.

That's a good rifle in a great caliber. I had one in a .243 Win Some years back and I liked it alot, but I had a chance at a Remington 700 VLS and traded into it.

I haven't done any shooting for a couple of weeks, but I'm eager to get some shooting time in this next week if I can.

I just got back from vacation and spending time with the Family, all is well and going good.

I'm wondering about seating those 180g Bergers to fit the magazine and how much it would affect the load I've already developed. I think I may try a few and give them a slight crimp like Butterbean likes to do. Maybe it'll tighten the groups up and then I'll be able to put more than one in the rifle.

later,

Dan

Dano, when I first developed one of my loads for my first stw, in all the excitement, my initial loads were way to long to fit in the mag. I had been single feeding them all at the bench, paying no mind to OAL and mag length. Well, come hunting season, about a week before, I was checking things to make sure that everything did fit. Well, I was about .035 too long. So I pushed them all back to 3.665. I fired a few rounds, and they shot OK, but not like they were when hand fed. After hunting season, I spent some time to see if I could manipulate the load. Long story short, I ended up dropping about .6 grains, and it printed on the money. I still shoot that load to this day.
Butterbeans idea with the factory crimp is a good one. It makes a lot of sense, as I think about it now. It enable you to make a more UNIFORM neck tension on the bullet, and not necessarily have a cannelure to do it either. It will, if you want it. But I believe that it at least helps with concentricity at the seating end, and ensures good bullet/ neck tension. It took me awhile to absorb that philosophy, and soon, I am going to utilize it.
I think you will make out fine when you adjust your OAL. I did the same thing when I first got my 300 RUM, same thing happened, except no change to chrarge weight was needed. I think that when the load is well balanced, it will shoot it regardless of bullet position. ( just a theory of mine). Take care my friend, and all the best to you and yours.

It's interesting to know there are many factors to accuracy and neck tension is one of them I've read about too. I guess it depends on how accurate you want to get on certain loads. The benchrest guys are all about this kind of stuff. They seem to try everything looking for the last 1/8 of an inch at 1000 yards. Reloading and shooting is a great hobby for us. I go on 6mmbr and typically look for articles written by 1000 yard br champions and each of them typically tells a little about their loading experience in getting that last bit of accuracy. Many firearms can be made extremely accurate by re loading knowledge and we are shooting a caliber with bullets that are of the highest bc and incredible for terminal performance in hunting. A great science and hobby we have here.

PS, Don't vote for a President or Congress person that objects to our hobby!

I just got my first 7mm STW back from the gunsmith last week.

Factory Rem 700 SPS in 7mm STW

Yup, you are now Hopelessly hooked, Lock, Stock, and Barrel. That rig looks sweet. I'll bet it carries nice. I really like that stock as well. I don't blame you for ditching the " Tupperware " stock. Looks and sounds to me like you've got a shooter on your hands. welcome to the " Hood", and don't be afraid to ask questions, and post results too. Nice job, welcome aboard!!
