7mm STW Brotherhood - For those who shoot the 7mm Shooting Times Westerner

I've got a dark metal design clamp style brake on mine. It works great, I do alot of shooting at the range it is loud. Don't think I'd shoot it without muffs, it really tames the recoil. Glad to see there are so many 7mm stw out there great cartridge

I have a suggestion for you Fred. Walkers Game Ear. I'm in Louisiana and know what you mean about quick shots. I started using game ears to save what little hearing I have left and I really like them.
Sleepy Time,
What does the game ear do ? I thought in enhanced hearing.

Thanks 7 STW.
I have a Defensive Edge Break on my Sendero 7 STW and it really tames the recoil and allows for quick follow up shots! I do hunt and shoot with ear protection though!

I've seen this too with plastic tipped bullets. I've always thought that over time most plastics will become brittle unless there is a reinforcing element introduced durring manufacturing. I've also thought that the harder the platic, the more brittle it can become. Maybe it's due to varying temperatures. Or it could be due to the breaking down of the petrolium products used to make plastics. I do know that UV light will break down plastic in a hurry as well. But this does seem like a problem that Bullet manufacturers should and could address.

On another note, My STW has a Vias Brake. It came with it, However the rifle is heavy enough to shoot comfortably with out it. The cool thing is the extremely low recoil allows me to see the bullet hit the target as there is little or no muzzle rise.

I've had a couple break off.The ones that did,the plastic was soft inside the bullet and somewhat caulky. It appeared that it did not cure right for some reason.

Fred, the game ear enhances hearing, but it also cuts out the muzzle blast. I have very significant hearing loss due to years of youthful stupidity and the game ear has been a god send. I can hear things I had forgotten made noise! I usually wear one game ear and an ear plug in the other ear. Only drawback is that it does screw with directions, especially at close ranges.

mine came with as a factory ported stainless syn bdl. I put it in a lss stock which is heavier. (did it more for looks then weight). With full power loads it kicks noticeably less then my 257 wby cdl that i was shooting side by side with it the other day and a whole lot less then my 7mag hawkeye that was also there. If i had to nail it down id say it recoils about like a mid weight 2506. Almost uncanny how little it recoils for what your getting. To be honest i dont like brakes and the noise that comes with them and if i would have bought it new i would have looked for one without a break. Recoil doesnt really bother me. But a 12 year old kid could shoot this thing if he could get over the noise. Its LOUD. even with ear protection. It makes the 7mag sound like a 22 mag.

First post. I have a Rem 700 BDL DM stainless with factory muzzle break. Love it. Bought it off guns international about 3 months ago. Still experimenting with loads. Tried RL19 and H-1000 with 162 gr A-Max. Seems to like the H-1000 better. Lots of great info in this forum.

I just got back from the range shooting the first Sendero 7mm STW that I got last month.

I tested reloads of 140 Accubonds with 81gr and 82gr of H1000. I saw no sign of pressure and it was shooting less than 1/2 MOA groups at 100 yards. The fps were averaging 3100 on the 81gr and 3200 on the 82gr. I think I'll go up to gradually to 85gr and see how the accuracy and the fps are. Also tested some reloads of 162 Amax with 75gr and 76gr H1000. Again with this load they were less than 1/2 MOA groups at 100 yards. The fps were averaging 2800 on the 75gr and 2900 on the 76gr. I think I'll go up to gradually to 79gr and see how the accuracy and the fps are.

And I really don't know what everyone is talking about in regards to the recoil. I think it is quite manageable and have decided not to add a muzzle brakes to this Sendero 7mm STW and the one I just bought that should be arriving next week at my FFL dealer.

Hello fellow STW lovers, I am also new to this addiction I have an STW built by Ken Farrell with a 26'' Shilen barrel and is ported by Mr Farrell I also installed a Quigley Ford 4x16x50 scope which is awesome, mine loves the 140 gr nosler ballistic tip and has completely smashed hog's here in Texas with my longest kill at 415yrds I am now trying the 168 Bergers havent put them on paper yet but they are rough on pig's I will be watching this thread for more info. Thanks

For the heck of it, I'm going to call Nosler and ask the plastic question. What is the shelf life of the plastic. They are good bullets and I want to try them and I want to hear what they say about new vs old style. I'll update everyone either way.

Brass is on it's way!

My 27" barrel STW has no muzzle brake, and is fine if you have your shoulder behind it but I have been bit by the scope acouple of times out in the field when I've layed behind it at an awkward body angle, most times I can regain the sight picture and watch the animal fall.

I've had some tips fall off 160gn AB Noslers as well but they still work.

To you guys that are shooting 140gn bullets how does your load get on in the wind?

I used to let those broken tips bother me a little on the AB's, they are bad about bouncing off the front of the magazine on my stw's and breaking off. One day I had 5 loads with broken tips and took them to my bench and shot them for kicks and grins to see if it made a difference. They shot as if they weren't even broke at all. A friend of mine made a funny one day and said they probably burn offf as soon as they leave the barrel as fast as they are going. :D
