It's funny how the original question was best for deer to 600-700 yards turned into elk at a 1000yd. My option would be to go with the 7 mm because it will kill just as well as the 300 at those distances on that animal with less recoil. If he said elk it would be different for sure. As for trying to argue with the velocities of the same bullet weights is not a good argument at all. I think the merits of bullets BC should be offset by its SD so you'd come up with a "caliber weighted efficiency" so you can sort of work out what brands do a better job G7 divided by SD
Hornady's new ELD's
6.5mm 143gr G7 .315 SD .293= 1.07
7 mm. 162gr G7 .308 SD .287= 1.07
7 mm 175gr G7 .330 SD .310= 1.06
308. 178gr G7 .271 SD .268= 1.01
308. 200gr G7 .315 SD .301= 1.04
308. 212gr G7 .336 SD .319= 1.05
338. 285gr G7 .394 SD .356= 1.10
Bergers VLD
6.5mm 140gr G7 .307 SD .287= 1.07
7 mm 168gr G7 .316 SD .298= 1.06
7 mm. 180gr G7 .345 SD .319= 1.08
7 mm. 195gr G7 .387 SD .345= 1.12
308. 175gr G7 .265 SD .264= 1.00
308. 190gr G7 .290 SD .286= 1.01
308. 210gr G7 .320 SD .316= 1.01
338. 250gr G7 .351 SD .313= 1.12
338. 300gr G7 .417 SD .375= 1.11
I think that's easily understandable and it would appear there is a slight loss in performance with 308 cal for some reason their G7 numbers need to be higher by 2-5% to match 6.5 and 7mm
I don't know what does everyone think? I think the playing field is even for them all

I think that's a great way to look at it gunner, but at the distances and game originally stated, we're pretty much splitting hairs. The 300 would provide a bit more energy, but the 7 would provide a bit less recoil. I really like the whole "caliber weighted efficiency" statistic, it really does bring things into perspective.

Here's the math. 260 Rem 140 Berger BC of .612 but had to lower the BC do to distance. Corrected BC .600. 1760 yards 35 degree angle = .819 cosine. Shoot to range was 1450 yards. You take the known distance and multiple the cosine. That gives you the shoot to range. The rifle is a 260 Remington 27" Kreger Barrel 1&8 twist. Hodgon 4350 powder 42.5grns. = 2975fps around 1050 ft-lbs energy and takes just over 3 seconds to reach its target. I was shooting true north to eliminate coriolas. The moa was dialed in at 49.6 MOA's. I adjusted for the twist rate of the barrel and the 2-3mph wind. Wind hold off was 14.5 moa. And yes you do have to hold for your wind for the 1760yards and not the 1450yards. It was about 100 degrees outside and I was at sea level in Brawlew California. I shoot in the dessert with my pop and family every Thanksgiving. All is welcome. And yes this is an invite. Just bring lots of water.

So I HAVE been right this whole time... To be exonerated is venerating, I must say.

Yes it is funny. I told the gentleman I would choose the 7mm over the 300. And i stated that I have shot both. I also said ( I ) was more accurate with the 7mm. I did not say the 7mm was more accurate. Then I stated my best group was with my 260 Rem then everyone got all bent out of shape. I am not a bench rest shooter by no means. But I have Defended my country. I am proud to be an AMERICAN!!!!! GOD bless the USA and for all those that have served. Thank you for my freedom and for your sacrifice. May GOD and all his angles watch over your family's.

Thanks for you service. My brother just got back stateside from his 2nd, back in Mid-Feb.

Sometimes people tend to fly off the handle a bit, I have been in the middle of more than my fair share of those ******* matches on the internet. It's a complete waste of time. I am one of the biggest 7mm advocates on here, I also have quite a number of .30 cal, and other random caliber rifles, too. I have just always and will always prefer the 7mm calibers.

In the past I was trying to compare weight for caliber, and people just weren't getting it. They were bringing up other weights, and factors, and BC's, and blah blah blah...They just didn't seem to understand what point I was trying to make, which is weight FOR caliber, not weight AND caliber.

Yes sir. Your more than welcome. I like to call some of these people Internet snipers. I just try to pass what little knolage I have learned over the past 30 years to help people acheve there goals. I never thought I was a good shot. But to many people convinced me otherwise. The one person I try hardest to prove wrong is myself. I feel by doin so I keep improving. I wish I could have used the 7mm in the service. It just wasn't an option. I really liked the 338 with 250 grains bullets. I am I big believer in every caliber rifle has its favorite grain bullet. As a civilian now I shoot the 260 Remington. I like it because it uses the same case as the 308. So mags and chassis systems fit the same. I mostly hunt in Texas and it has plenty of horsepower to take down anythang I need at distance. God Bless you and your family sir.

I've had my fair share of toys as well... I briefly owned a 35 Whelen... skipped 33 cal altogether.
Now I have a variety of 6.5mms,7s and 30s.
Heck, all I had when I got out of the USAF back in 04 was a Ruger M77 MKII in 280 rem... in Ruger fashion, the thing shot... everything at a mediocre level.
Now I have more than a handful of barrel burning fools... and hardly the time to feed them.
They're all a horse a piece in all honesty. Build your baby... shoot the thing, replace when/if necessary.

Truth be told the most sacrilegious thing I have done in my 32 years is I'm turning a sps limited 7stw into a 28 Nosler...
The thing shoots ok.... but there are a few rough spots in the barrel, and fouls easy.
I figured a Brux will remedy that nicely.

I hear those are good barrels. That new nosler looks real promising too. Keep me posted. I'm thankin of a 7mm edge. Lol. Try the old 300 RUM thang that got necked up to a 338 RUM. Supposedly surpasses the 338 Lapua. I thank it was able to hold more powder and has a sharper neck. I'm not sure though. So I though why not buy a 300 RUM and neck it down to a 7mm and see if it does the same thang. I'm just contemplating it for now, still doing research. Please let me know how your build goes.

I built this 300WM with a 1939 Mosin Nagant action and Krieger #4 barrel, shot a deer in 2015 and retired it.

Buck2013436meterss7mmRemMag.jpg

I built this 7mmRM with a 1963 Remington 700 action and Shilen #3 stainless, shot a deer in 2013 and retired it.

I own (7) 7mmRemMag rifles and (3) 300WinMag rifles. I am building more of both.

What is holding back the 7mmRM is the mistakes made in SAAMI registration:
1) 3.29" OAL should have been 3.34"
2) 61,000 psi should have been 65,000 psi
3) Published load data is often way below SAAMI levels

What is holding the 300 Win Mag back for me is:
1) the increased recoil with optimum bullets requires more shooting skill.
