7mm-08 short range deer bullet

I could be wrong but wouldn't you have a bunch of the bearing surface shoved in the case with a 168 to fit in the mag box?

I have heard a LOT of good things on the 120 gr Ballistic Tip. That is what I am thinking as of now.

MudRunner2005 are you thinking the heavier bullet will slow down the velocity at close range and thus allowing the VLD to achieve its 2-3" of penetration before fragmenting? Curious to the heavier weight versus the 140 gr option.

Thanks to everyone for taking time out of your day to help me!

Steve

Precisely. But, there is also a 2nd positive... Despite the slower muzzle velocity, it will hold and retain more energy (hit harder) at farther distances.

I've been shooting Berger 210 and 215 bullets in my .308 Win. for many years. Even though they're only leaving the 24" barrel at around 2500 FPS MV, their elevation drop (even out to 1000) is holding its own against 140 grain 6.5mm bullets in similar sized cartridges, and beating them in wind drift and ft. lbs. of energy downrange.

A 215 at 2500 with a 100 yard zero drops 376" at 1000. 6.5 Creed at 2800fps with a 140 vld is 305" with a 100 hard zero. 70" isnt quite holding its own.
There exactly the same in wind drift 70"

It's actually only 367" drop for the .308 Win w/ 215, and 306" with the 140 VLD... So, 60" drop, not 70"... That actually makes a big difference at that distance.

However, wind drift and energy...

Drift:

.308 - 35"
6.5 - 35.4"

Energy:

.308 - 954
6.5 - 689

And also, we're talking about 7mm-08 Rem here, not .308 Win (that was just an example I used), let's not get this thread off-track...

I've got 120 grain NBT and 140 grain Partition loads for my 7-08 that I'm hoping to try out this season.

The 120s are running 3000fps and the 140s are 2860fps in my 20" factory barreled Model Seven.

I have no desire to shoot anything heavier than 140s in my 7-08. If I want heavier, I grab my Model Seven SS in 7 SAUM. It shoots 160 grain Partitions 2960fps in its 22" factory barrel.

My bad on the 9", I'm not getting off track your the one trying to compare a slow 215 to a faster 6.5 140.

About 3300fps and 1/2" 3 shot groups in my bone stock Saum, and I'm shooting Nosler seconds. Rib shot equals 1/2" in 1 1/2 out. Shoulder shot will anchor anything that grazes in it's tracks.
What do you mean by Nosler seconds? Cosmetic defects or ??

What do you think the 120 BT will do at 7mm-08 velocities in my 22" barrel (guessing 2950-3100 depending on powder and load work up)?

It's a great bullet. Perfect match for a 7-08. You'll get penetration, so if you want bang flops choot'em shot high shoulder shots. Thru the ribs will work as well and expect a short death run and less meat damage . About the same as any other bullet that performs correctly.
