7mm-08 for elk

My neice has her first Bull ELK tag in Nevada and shoots a 7mm-08. The only factory ammo they could find was the Hornady 150 ELD-X I offered to reload for them and would like feedback from shooters who have used the 7mm-08 for Elk. What Bullet and Powder............ Ive used the 708 in the past but used the 120 X

I highly recommend the ELD M 162 at 2600 to 2750 fps. It will throttle an ELK out to 1100 yards

I had to look, it's still over 1500fps at 1100yds, but I've shot deer at 1500fps and less...it can be kinda underwhelming but still effective through the ribs. It's farther than I would be comfortable shooting an elk...maybe 800yds would be my max with the 162 at 2700fps

Last 7-08 I had I loaded 150 eldx at 2890 FPS with RL17 and it was awesome for elk.

I love the 7-08. I should get another one.

I took an elk with my 7-08 loaded with the 131gr Hammer Hunter over Varget. At 340 yards the shot was a little forward. It broke the near femur, through the chest, broke the far femur, and exited. Plenty of power for elk.

what kind of range is she capable of making a good shot this would help me in making a suggestion

I wouldn't hesitate to take a 7-08 out for elk. I don't own one so no help on the components but this caliber is on my short list.

Can Hunter 35 you make a valid point. I run around at 9-12,000 ft here in Colorado. So I get a bit more from a given cartridge...and I only use the ELDM. I would not dare use a lesser weight or a controlled expansion bullet at these sort of ranges....800 yards is a more realistic figure in that respect.

For large deer up to Sambar with the 7-08 I've used 150gr Nosler Partition, and 160gr Woodleigh PP. Both work well.

My 7-08 is my light mountain rifle that I take in the thicker timber areas where a long shot is 300 yards. I shoot 150 Partitions over 42 gr Varget and its a killer at 2740fps in a 22" Tikka t3x.

If you expect longer shots, the 162 ELD-M is my go to bullet in my 280.

I agree with Sledhead... Partitions or Accubonds over Varget. For my 7-08 I usually use 140s, but I'm not apposed to 150s.

More than Enough, I've used 53gr BTHP @ 4300 fps on Elk one head shot stops them in their tracks .

That eld-x should work just fine.....maybe not past 500 yds
