We normally run the 162 amax also, I used the 180 Berger's because they matched the HV reticule the best in my NXS 2.5-10 on my light weight rifle. After you pass the 600 yard line you can dial, but out to 600 it matches within a couple of inches in a wide varity of conditions. You are correct in the fact that you cannot push the 180 fast enough to make it a ballistic advantage. It is however more bullet and has possible better terminal effects. I have not ever shot an animal with one though. Again I used it because it worked the best with the HV reticule.
We got the best accuracy at .015" off the land, it seems to be pretty picky about OAL but once you find where it wants to shoot your good to go.
